How to preload and download GTA 6

GTA 6 preload starts November 12, 2026. How to preload on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, how physical download codes work, and what we know about install size.

What you need

  • A digital copy, or a redeemed download code
  • An internet connection
  • Free storage space (size not announced yet)

Preloading opens on November 12, 2026, a week before GTA 6 launches on November 19. If you have bought the game, you can download it early so it is ready the moment it unlocks.

Preload on PlayStation 5

  1. Buy or preorder GTA 6 from the PlayStation Store, or redeem the code from a boxed copy.
  2. From November 12, open the game in your Game Library and select Download.
  3. Leave the console in Rest Mode with downloads allowed so it finishes overnight.

Preload on Xbox Series X|S

  1. Buy or preorder GTA 6 from the Microsoft Store, or redeem the code from a boxed copy.
  2. From November 12, go to My games & apps and install it from the ready to install list.
  3. Use the Sleep power mode so downloads continue while the console is off.

Bought a boxed copy?

Rockstar’s store says physical versions only contain a download code and no disc. Redeem the code on your console’s store, then download the game like a digital purchase. You need an internet connection either way.

How big is the download?

Rockstar has not announced the install size yet. Sizes you see online are guesses. We will update this guide when the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store lists the official size. Until then, free up as much space as you can before November 12.

What time can I play?

Preloading does not let you play early. The game unlocks on release day; see the GTA 6 release time by country.
