Grand Theft Auto V

Release history

  • PS3 / Xbox 360: 17 September 2013. GTA Online followed on 1 October 2013.
  • PS4 / Xbox One: 18 November 2014.
  • PC: 14 April 2015.
  • PS5 / Xbox Series X|S: 15 March 2022, sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. Physical copies followed in April 2022.

Where it is available now

  • Consoles: PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Since 18 June 2026, owners of any PS4 copy and of the digital Xbox One version can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version for free. Before that, the upgrade was a paid purchase. Story Mode and GTA Online progress carry over.
  • PC: There are two builds, sold through the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
    • GTA V Enhanced came out on 4 March 2025 as a free upgrade for existing PC owners. It brings the PS5/Series X|S features to PC. Story Mode and Online progress can be migrated once.
    • GTA V Legacy is the original 2015 build under a new name. Rockstar keeps it for PCs that can’t run Enhanced. Legacy and Enhanced players can’t play GTA Online together.
    • Enhanced also reached the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass in April 2025.
  • PS3 / Xbox 360: Story Mode still works on discs and existing downloads. Online services for these versions ended on 16 December 2021.

Sales

  • GTA V had sold in over 230 million units as of Take-Two’s Q1 fiscal 2027 report (7 August 2026). “Sold in” counts copies shipped to stores, not copies sold to players.
  • The whole GTA series stood at almost 475 million units at the same point.

Grand Theft Auto Online: overview

  • Launch: GTA Online is the persistent multiplayer side of GTA V. It went live on 1 October 2013, two weeks after GTA V, as a free mode for anyone who owned the game.
  • Setting: It shares GTA V’s map of Los Santos and Blaine County. Players create their own character, whose story begins a few months before GTA V’s single-player campaign.
  • Activities: Players build a criminal career through missions, races, multi-part heists and owned businesses.
  • Launch problems: The first weeks had server and save-data issues. Rockstar paid GTA$500,000 to everyone who played in October 2013 as compensation.
  • Platform history:
    • It moved to PS4/Xbox One (2014) and PC (2015) with GTA V.
    • It launched on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 15 March 2022. On those consoles it is also sold separately from Story Mode, and it was free on PS5 until 14 June 2022.
    • Service on PS3 and Xbox 360 ended on 16 December 2021, and characters from those versions could not be transferred.
  • Ongoing support: Rockstar has released free content updates for well over a decade. The most recent major one Take-Two lists is The Kortz Center Heist summer update, released 14 July 2026 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Take-Two names the GTA series, including GTA Online’s recurrent spending, among its largest sources of revenue.
  • What happens after GTA VI: Rockstar has not set out a public plan for GTA Online once GTA VI launches on 19 November 2026.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition

What it is: Remasters of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 4 by Grove Street Games. It launched on 11 November 2021.

Where it is available now

  • Rockstar lists it for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Store).
  • On iOS and Android the three games are sold individually on the App Store and Google Play (see the Netflix section below).

Current status

  • The launch was heavily criticised for bugs, visual glitches and art changes. Rockstar briefly pulled the PC version from sale soon after release and patched the game several times.
  • The latest major patch, Title Update 1.112, came out on 12 November 2024:
    • It added a “Classic Lighting” option and many visual fixes that first appeared in the mobile versions.
    • It removed Grove Street Games from the opening splash screens. The studio is still in the end credits.
    • The visual overhaul applied to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Coverage of how much of it reached PS4, Xbox One and Switch is mixed.
  • Take-Two said the collection beat its sales expectations but never published a unit figure. The often-quoted “10 million” is an estimate made by outlets from Take-Two’s franchise totals, not an official number.

Netflix Games mobile versions

Which titles: Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition. They were three separate iOS/Android apps, ported by Video Games Deluxe and published by Rockstar.

Timeline

  • 29 November 2023: Netflix announced the games and opened pre-registration.
  • 14 December 2023: The games launched for Netflix subscribers through the App Store, Google Play and the Netflix app, with no ads or in-app purchases.
  • 13 December 2024: Last day to play GTA III and Vice City through Netflix, one year after launch. Netflix said games leave when their licences expire.
  • 12 December 2025: Last day to play San Andreas through Netflix, according to the date on Netflix’s game page. Netflix’s catalogue no longer includes any of the trilogy games.

Where they are available now

  • GTA III and Vice City can still be bought as standard paid apps on the App Store and Google Play. Check the stores for San Andreas.
  • Progress saved in the Netflix versions does not carry over to the paid apps.
