Carl “CJ” Johnson is the only playable lead in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Rockstar’s own description sets the story in the early 90s: five years after CJ left Los Santos, he comes home, and a pair of corrupt cops frame him for murder. That sends him across the whole state to save his family.

Who he is

PC Gamer describes CJ as a former gangster who returns from Liberty City to bury his mother and is soon dragged back into the gang life he tried to leave. At the cemetery his old friends call him out for running away, and the walk home turns into a drive by from the Ballas. His family is his brother Sweet and his sister Kendl, and the first missions team him up again with Big Smoke and Ryder.

Officer Tenpenny warns him early on that leaving Los Santos will bring the full weight of the law down on him, which keeps the first part of the story inside the city.

GameSpot calls him the series’ first fully voiced African American lead, and the most capable and personable protagonist the series had seen.

Gameplay

IGN’s guide explains that CJ’s skills improve with use, so cycling, driving and flying all get better over time. What he eats and how often he works out change his fat, muscle and stamina, and barbers and clothes stores let you change his look.

Voice actor

The game’s manual credits Chris Bellard, also known as Young Maylay, as Carl “CJ” Johnson. GameSpot’s 2004 cast report described him as an aspiring Los Angeles rapper and a friend of DJ Pooh, who helped write the story, and its review praised his performance. In 2019 GamesRadar reported that Bellard said on Instagram he has no involvement in GTA 6.

Spoiler

Late in the story CJ takes over Madd Dogg’s mansion in the hills after clearing out the man who seized it, then works for Mike Toreno in exchange for Sweet’s release. IGN’s guide notes the mansion is marked with CJ’s initials once it is his.
