Lance “Ryder” Wilson is one of the Grove Street crew CJ falls back in with when he returns to Los Santos. He is quick to pull a gun, and his jobs are mostly about stealing weapons and supplies for the gang.
Who he is
Ryder is there from the first mission, “Big Smoke”. After the Ballas attack outside the cemetery, the group splits up and you follow Ryder home on your bike. In “Drive-Thru” he is the one who spots a Ballas car acting suspiciously outside Cluckin’ Bell.
His own first mission, “Ryder”, is a tour of the neighbourhood. CJ drives him to Reece’s barbershop, where Ryder comments on CJ’s new haircut, and then to Well Stacked Pizza across the street. While CJ orders, Ryder pulls a gun on the cashier, the cashier answers with a shotgun, and the two of them run for the car.
Role in the story
GameSpot’s guide calls Ryder the unofficial armorer of the Grove Street Families, and his four missions fit that role. In “Home Invasion” CJ creeps through the house of a sleeping colonel to carry out boxes of guns before daylight. “Catalyst” has CJ standing on top of a moving train, throwing crates down to Ryder in his car. “Robbing Uncle Sam” sees the pair break into a compound at Ocean Docks and load boxes into a van with a forklift.
Voice actor
The game’s manual credits MC Eiht as Lance “Ryder” Wilson. GamesRadar’s 2004 preview and IGN’s cast list name him too.
Spoiler
GamesRadar lists Smoke and Ryder’s betrayal as one of the best moments in the series. At the end of “The Green Sabre” CJ finds his old friends working with the Ballas and the corrupt cops. Ryder then turns up in San Fierro with the drug Syndicate. At Pier 69, after T-Bone Mendez falls, Ryder tries to escape by speedboat, and GameSpot’s guide explains that CJ chases him across the water and kills him.
