GTA 5 100% completion checklist
Everything that counts toward 100% completion in GTA 5 Story Mode: story missions, Strangers and Freaks, hobbies, random events and miscellaneous tasks.
Key facts
- Trophy
- Career Criminal (100% Game Completion)
- Story missions
- All 69
- Hobbies and pastimes
- 42 of 59
- Strangers and Freaks
- 20 of 58
- Random events
- 14
- Miscellaneous
- 16 of 30
Reaching 100% in GTA 5 takes far more than finishing the story, but it does not ask for everything. Completion is split into five categories, and only the story asks for every item. The totals below come from IGN’s checklist, with extra detail from GamesRadar’s 100% guide.
| Category | What you need |
|---|---|
| Story missions | All 69 |
| Hobbies and pastimes | 42 of 59 |
| Strangers and Freaks | 20 of 58 |
| Random events | 14 |
| Miscellaneous | 16 of 30 |
Many tasks only need part of their total for 100%, even though the matching trophy asks for all of them.
Story missions
- Every main story mission, including all five of Lester’s assassination missions, as GamesRadar notes. The assassinations are story missions, so the optional four count too.
Strangers and Freaks
You need 20 missions, and IGN says they come from just eight characters. GamesRadar notes most of them are done as Franklin:
- Tonya: all of her towing missions.
- Beverly: all of his paparazzo missions.
- Hao: Shift Work, which also opens the street races.
- Barry: Franklin’s missions.
- Mary-Ann: Franklin’s Exercising Demons mission.
- Dom: all of his extreme sports missions.
- Omega: collect and return all 50 spaceship parts.
- Peter Dreyfuss: collect all 50 letter scraps, then finish the mission they unlock, A Starlet in Vinewood.
IGN lists these as not needed: the Epsilon missions, Trevor’s rampages, Cletus, the Minute Men, Maude, Abigail, Nigel and Mrs. Thornhill, Josh, Mrs. Philips and The Last One, which only opens once you reach 100%. See our collectibles guide for the spaceship parts and letter scraps.
Hobbies and pastimes
| Activity | What counts |
|---|---|
| Off-road races | All 6 (they open after Trevor’s Crystal Maze mission) |
| Street races | All 5 (they open after Hao’s Shift Work) |
| Sea races | All 4 (they open after Trevor’s Hood Safari mission) |
| Shooting range | A medal in each challenge category, at any Ammu-Nation range |
| Flight School | A medal in all 12 lessons (it opens while you prepare The Merryweather Heist) |
| Triathlons | All 3 |
| Golf, tennis and darts | One game of each (IGN’s list says to win each one) |
| Parachute jumps | All 14 heli and base jumps |
| Strip club | One private dance |
IGN lists these as not needed: stunt plane time trials, bail bonds, the ground and air trafficking jobs, the hunting challenge, yoga, the Wildlife Photography Challenge and the stock car races.
Random events
- 14 random events. These start when the mini map flashes and a blue dot appears. GamesRadar counts 57 events in total, while IGN counts 60, including three events it marks as exclusive to the newer versions.
Miscellaneous
You need 16 of the 30 tasks here. IGN and GamesRadar both list these among them:
- Stunt jumps: 25 of 50.
- Under the Bridge: 25 of 50.
- Knife Flights: 8 of 15.
- Properties: buy 5 (GamesRadar specifies money making properties).
- Vehicles: buy one from a website.
- Chop: take him for a walk and play fetch.
- Cinema: watch a film.
- Shop robbery: hold up a store.
- Friend activities: go to a bar, the cinema, the strip club and play darts with another lead.
What you do not need
These collectibles are fun and some unlock trophies or rewards, but neither checklist includes them:
- Nuclear waste barrels
- Epsilon tracts
- Submarine parts
- Monkey mosaics (IGN confirms these do not count)
Trophies linked to completion
From the trophy lists on GamesRadar and TechRadar:
| Trophy | What it asks |
|---|---|
| Career Criminal | Reach 100% Game Completion |
| Show Off | Complete every stunt jump |
| Close Shave | Complete every Under the Bridge and Knife Flight challenge |
| Solid Gold, Baby | Earn 70 gold medals on missions and Strangers and Freaks |
| Multi-Disciplined | Earn gold in every applicable hobby and pastime |
Show Off and Close Shave need the full sets, so if you are hunting trophies too, finish those lists in one go.
What 100% unlocks
- UFOs. IGN says three UFOs appear only after 100%: above Mount Chiliad, above Fort Zancudo and high above Sandy Shores. A fourth, wrecked on the sea floor, can be found at any time. Our easter eggs guide explains where and when to look.
- The Last One. IGN lists this final Strangers and Freaks mission as needing 100% to unlock.
Tips for the last few percent
- Start with the categories that need everything: the story, the eight Strangers and Freaks characters and the hobbies list.
- Switch to Franklin for side missions, since most of the required Strangers and Freaks belong to him.
- Random events show up as you explore. Kotaku notes that some appear in fixed places and others anywhere, so take them whenever the mini map flashes.
- Pick up spaceship parts and letter scraps as you pass them, rather than leaving all 100 for the end.
