What you need

  • A PS5
  • A YouTube or Twitch account linked to the console
  • Two factor sign in turned on for that account
  • For other platforms: a capture card, a PC and HDCP turned off

There are two ways to stream GTA from a PS5:

  • Built-in broadcast. The console streams straight to YouTube or Twitch. You need nothing extra. This is the quickest way to start.
  • Capture card and PC. The console sends video to a capture card, and a computer running OBS sends the stream out. You get overlays, alerts, a better mic setup and any platform you like.

Both work for GTA V today and for GTA 6, which launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026.

Requirements below were checked on 27 October 2026. Platforms change their rules, so check the linked pages before your first stream.

Option 1: broadcast straight from the PS5

Simplest setup: the console streams straight to the platform. No PC needed.

Which platforms the PS5 supports

PlayStation’s broadcast guide names YouTube and Twitch as the services you link for broadcasting. Sony says the services you can link vary by country or region.

Other platforms, such as Kick or TikTok, are not part of the built-in feature. For those, use the capture card route further down.

Before you start

Each platform has its own rules for going live.

  • YouTube: your channel must be verified with a phone number, you must be at least 16, and you can’t have had a live streaming restriction in the past 90 days. Turning on live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. See our YouTube streaming guide.
  • Twitch: you need a Twitch account. See our Twitch streaming guide.
  • Two-factor authentication: Sony says some services need 2FA turned on before a PS5 broadcast will start. Turn it on in your YouTube (Google) or Twitch account first.

You can link an account the first time you broadcast, or do it ahead of time.

  1. On the PS5 home screen, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Linked Services.
  2. Choose YouTube or Twitch and select Link Account.
  3. Follow the on-screen steps. You usually sign in on your phone or computer.
  4. When it works, Linked appears next to the service.

You can also link services online in your PlayStation account under Linked Services, or in the PlayStation App (gear icon, then Linked Services).

Step 2: set your broadcast options

  1. Go to Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Broadcasts.
  2. Under Video Quality, pick the resolution and frame rate. The choices depend on the service you stream to.
  3. Under Audio, choose whether to include your microphone and party chat.
  4. Under Camera, set the position, size and brightness of your camera feed if you have one.
  5. Under Overlays, choose whether viewer comments and new viewer alerts show on your screen, and where.
  6. Turn on Convert Broadcast Chat to Speech if you want chat read out to you. It only works in some languages.

The PS5 remembers your broadcast details and settings for next time.

Step 3: go live

  1. Load GTA and get to the point where you want to start.
  2. Press the Create button and select Broadcast.
  3. Choose YouTube or Twitch.
  4. Enter your stream title and details.
  5. To add your camera or party audio, select Broadcast Options.
  6. Select Go Live.

A broadcast card appears in the control centre. It shows how long you have been live and how many people are watching. From the card you can mute your mic, turn the camera on or off, show chat on screen, pause the broadcast, or stop it.

Mic and camera

  • Any headset that works for PS5 voice chat can carry your voice into the broadcast. Check Audio in the broadcast settings is set to include your mic.
  • To show yourself on stream, Sony lists the PS5 HD Camera (CFI-ZEY series) and the older PlayStation Camera (CUH-ZEY series).
  • If you include party chat, tell your party first. Their voices go out to everyone watching.

Limits of the built-in broadcast

  • Only the game screen and game audio are shared. Menus and other apps are not shown to viewers.
  • Sony notes that, depending on the game, some scenes may not appear to viewers.
  • You choose one service when you start a broadcast.
  • Your layout is limited to the camera and the built-in chat and activity overlays. There are no custom overlays, alerts or scene changes.

If the broadcast is stuck on “preparing”

Turn on two-factor authentication on the linked YouTube or Twitch account, then try again. This is the fix Sony suggests.

Option 2: stream with a capture card and PC

TVLag free picture
Capture card setup: more control over overlays, audio and quality. The TV still shows the game through HDMI passthrough.

A capture card sits between your PS5 and your TV. You play on the TV as normal while the card sends a copy of the picture and sound to your computer. OBS then streams it to any platform.

What you need

  • A capture card with HDMI in and HDMI out (passthrough). See capture cards and gear.
  • Two HDMI cables.
  • A PC or Mac with the right USB port for your card, or a free PCIe slot for an internal card.
  • OBS Studio (free). See our OBS guide.

Step 1: turn off HDCP on the PS5

HDCP is copy protection. If it is on, the capture card shows a black screen.

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to your TV first, not through the capture card.
  2. Go to Settings > System > HDMI.
  3. Turn off Enable HDCP.

Elgato says turning it off does not affect gameplay.

Step 2: connect the cables

  1. Plug an HDMI cable from the PS5’s HDMI out into the capture card’s HDMI In.
  2. Plug a second HDMI cable from the card’s HDMI Out into your TV or monitor. This is the passthrough, so you keep playing with no added delay.
  3. Connect the card to your computer with its USB cable. Elgato says the Game Capture 4K S needs a USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) port and the 4K X needs USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) for full performance. USB 2.0 ports don’t have enough bandwidth.

Step 3: check the PS5 video output

  1. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  2. Set the resolution to what you want to capture, for example 2160p for 4K or 1080p for a lighter load.

If your OBS preview looks washed out or grey, the PS5 is probably sending HDR. Either turn HDR off in the same menu while you stream, or use your capture card software’s tone-mapping option.

Step 4: add the card in OBS

  1. Open OBS.
  2. In the Sources box, click + and choose Video Capture Device.
  3. Name it, for example “PS5”, and click OK.
  4. Pick your capture card from the device list.
  5. Set the resolution and frame rate if needed.

Then set up your audio, encoder and stream key as shown in our OBS guide.

Party chat through a capture card

Party chat doesn’t always reach your computer through HDMI. If you want your friends on stream, check your capture card maker’s help pages for the options it supports.

Start with the built-in broadcast. Move to a capture card when you want a custom layout, better audio or a platform the PS5 doesn’t support.

Before you stream GTA

  • No leaks or spoilers. Rockstar removes leaked pre-release footage and standalone cutscene videos. Full playthroughs are a different matter. Read our summary of Rockstar’s video policy.
  • Radio music can be claimed. GTA’s licensed songs can trigger copyright systems on YouTube and Twitch. Turning the in-game radio down or off while live avoids most problems.
  • Online rules still apply. Never stream with cheats or mod menus in GTA Online. Rockstar’s terms ban them and can suspend or ban your account.
