GTA 6 comes out on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and preloading opens on November 12. Most launch night problems are console problems: a full drive, a paused download, a flat controller. This guide covers the settings to check in the week before, using the menu names from Sony’s and Microsoft’s own support pages.

Clear storage space first

Rockstar hasn’t announced the install size yet, and we won’t guess it. We have not found a current, reliable figure for GTA V on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S either, so we are not quoting one as a reference. Clear as much as you comfortably can now, and we will add the official size here once the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store lists it.

PS5

  1. Go to Settings > Storage to see how much space is free.
  2. To remove something, go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, pick it and select Delete.
  3. Some games show Customize, which lets you delete parts you no longer use (a finished campaign or unused extras) and keep the rest.

Xbox Series X|S

  1. Press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage devices. Each drive shows its used and free space.
  2. Select a drive and choose Uninstall content to reach the Free up space screen, or View contents to see what each game takes up.

Microsoft notes that games labelled Optimized for Xbox Series X|S have to run from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. If you have a USB drive, move older games onto it instead of deleting them, so you don’t have to download them again later.

Preload and automatic downloads

Preloading starts on November 12 for anyone who has bought the game. Our preload and download guide has the steps for each store. The settings below make sure the download, and any day one update, finish while you sleep.

PS5:

  1. Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode: turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
  2. Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates: turn on Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
  3. Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings: turn on automatic download and install.

Xbox Series X|S:

  1. Profile & system > Settings > General > Power options: choose Sleep.
  2. Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates: turn on Keep my games & apps up to date.

Microsoft says games and their extras install automatically on your home console only when both of these are set. A useful test: on November 12, start the preload, put the console to sleep or in Rest Mode, and check the progress the next morning. That gives you a week to fix anything.

Picture: performance, HDR and 120Hz

Rockstar hasn’t said whether GTA 6 has a performance mode, a quality mode or both. You can still set your preferences now.

  • PS5 Game Presets: go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets and choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode. Sony notes this applies only to games that offer these modes.
  • Xbox: Microsoft’s support pages don’t describe a console wide equivalent. Expect to choose in the game’s own menu if it offers a choice.

HDR calibration is worth doing before launch, since it affects every HDR game:

  • PS5: Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR.
  • Xbox: Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options > Calibrate HDR for games. Microsoft also suggests turning off your TV’s energy saving mode and sharpening for HDR gaming.

120Hz and VRR only matter if your TV supports them, and Rockstar hasn’t said whether GTA 6 uses either.

  • PS5: 120 Hz Output and VRR are in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony says 4K at 120Hz needs an HDMI 2.1 port and the console’s own cable or an Ultra High Speed one.
  • Xbox: TV & display options has Refresh rate, and Allow variable refresh rate sits under Video modes. Microsoft says these options only appear when your TV supports them.

Controller, headset and accessibility

Charge and update your controller. On PS5, go to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. On Xbox, go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Controllers & headsets, select your controller, select ”…” and choose Firmware version if it shows an update. On PS5, Supply Power to USB Ports (in the same Rest Mode menu as above) keeps a pad charging overnight.

3D audio for headphones:

  • PS5: Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), then Enable 3D Audio for Headphones. Try Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile first.
  • Xbox: Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output, then pick Windows Sonic for Headphones in the Headset format dropdown.

Accessibility at system level:

  • PS5: Settings > Accessibility has Text Size (under Display and Sound), Closed Captions, and Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller (under Controllers).
  • Xbox: Profile & system > Settings > Accessibility has Captioning, Magnifier and Button mapping.

Captions set here cover videos and apps. Subtitles inside GTA 6 will be in the game’s own menu. PS5 Game Presets also has a Subtitles and Audio setting, though Sony notes some presets don’t apply to every game. Rockstar hasn’t detailed the game’s accessibility options yet.

Internet and offline play

You need an internet connection to download GTA 6, including boxed copies, which contain a download code rather than a disc. After that, the UK PlayStation Store lists the game with “Offline play enabled”. Rockstar’s store notes that some features may require a connection or a Rockstar Games account, without saying which. More on this in platforms and requirements.
