Update the controller, then use the Xbox Accessories app to remap buttons and save a GTA 6 profile, and set vibration in Settings > Accessibility > Controller. These are Xbox system settings, so they work in every game, GTA 6 included. Not announced Rockstar and Microsoft haven’t said how GTA 6 uses the Xbox Wireless Controller, or what controller options the game’s own menu will have. We will add those once the game is out on November 19.

What the Xbox Accessories app can change

The Xbox Accessories app comes pre-installed on Xbox consoles. To open it, press the Xbox button, then go to My games & apps > See all > Apps > Xbox Accessories. Select Configure under your controller.

Confirmed For a standard Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One controller, Xbox Support lists:

  • Remapping buttons
  • Swapping the sticks and the triggers
  • Saving multiple profiles
  • Controller vibration
  • Firmware updates
  • Xbox Controller Assist (formerly Xbox Copilot)

The Elite Series 2 and the Xbox Adaptive Controller get more, covered below.

Make a GTA 6 profile

Confirmed Xbox Support’s steps for a standard controller:

  1. In the Xbox Accessories app, select your controller, then Configure.
  2. Choose New profile and make your changes.
  3. Press B to save them.

To change an existing profile, pick it from the list and select Edit. To undo everything, pick a profile and select Edit > Restore to default.

Xbox Support notes that the Share button on newer controllers can be remapped as well.

Analysis Leave buttons at their defaults until you have played. Rockstar hasn’t shown GTA 6’s control layout, so a remap made now could clash with the game’s own scheme. A sensible plan is to create an empty “GTA 6” profile now and edit it after your first session.

Vibration

Confirmed Xbox Support says the triggers on the Xbox Series X|S controller often vibrate to give feedback in games. To change vibration:

  1. Press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system > Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility > Controller > Vibration settings.
  3. If you have more than one controller, choose yours and select Configure.
  4. On a standard Xbox Wireless Controller, select Turn on vibration to switch it on or off.
  5. On an Elite Series 2, choose a profile, then Edit > Vibration, and move the sliders.

So the standard controller has an on or off switch at system level, while the Elite lets you set the strength.

Xbox Support’s own video walks through the same menu:

Analysis Keep vibration on for GTA 6 unless it bothers you. If the game offers its own vibration options, they will sit in the game’s settings menu, not here.

Stick sensitivity: Elite Series 2 and Adaptive only

Confirmed Xbox Support says stick sensitivity settings in the app are supported on the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and on analog joysticks connected to an Xbox Adaptive Controller. The standard controller isn’t on that list.

On an Elite, open a profile, select Edit, then the Left stick or Right stick tab:

Sensitivity curveHow Xbox describes it
DefaultStick movement matches movement in the game
DelayedFeels like a larger dead zone; you push further before anything happens
AggressiveSmall pushes give large movement
InstantA quick snap of movement, then it behaves like Default
SmoothLike Default at first, then slower further out

Curve adjustment strengthens or weakens the chosen curve on a slider, with 0 in the middle. Calculation sets how diagonal movement is measured: Radial, Axis-independent or True diagonals. Xbox notes that every game reads these settings differently, so test them in each game.

Analysis Try Default first. If aiming feels twitchy, Delayed or Smooth on the right stick are the curves to test. If driving feels slow to respond, try Aggressive on the left stick.

More Elite Series 2 options

Confirmed The Elite Series 2 stores up to three profiles on the controller itself. Assign them to slots in the app and switch with the Profile button. With no bars lit under the button, the controller uses its default mapping. Xbox Support also lists paddle and bumper remapping, a Shift button for second functions, toggle holds, and system actions such as Record that or Take screenshot on a button.

Update the controller

Firmware updates add features and fixes. Press the Xbox button, go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Controllers & headsets, and select your controller. Select …, and if Firmware version says Update, select it.

If a wireless update fails, plug the controller into the console with a USB cable that carries data. Xbox Support says the update can take up to 3 minutes; don’t unplug it while it runs. Analysis Do this in the week before launch, not on launch night. Our launch day setup guide has the other settings worth checking.

Sign in with your controller

If more than one person plays on your Xbox, tie a controller to your profile. Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories, select the controller, then … > Assigned to. To have that controller sign you in when you turn it on, go to Account > Sign-in, security & PIN > This controller signs in > Link controller.

Accessibility options

Profile & system > Settings > Accessibility > Controller holds three controller settings:

  • Button mapping, to set up the controller for how you play.
  • Vibration settings, as above.
  • Xbox Controller Assist settings, which link two controllers so two people can play as one.

Confirmed With Controller Assist, the first player’s controller is the primary controller and earns the achievements. The second, assisting controller doesn’t have to be signed in. To turn it on, connect both controllers, then on the primary controller go to Accessibility > Controller > Xbox Controller Assist settings > Turn on Xbox Controller Assist.

Analysis Controller Assist suits a parent helping a child through a mission, or a player who wants a second person to take over the camera or driving.

The Accessibility menu also has Mono output under Audio, plus Narrator, Magnifier, high contrast and color filters. Not announced Rockstar hasn’t detailed GTA 6’s own accessibility options yet.

Common questions

Does GTA 6 use the Xbox controller in special ways?

Not announced Microsoft and Rockstar haven’t said. On PS5, Sony and Rockstar have named the DualSense features GTA 6 uses; see best DualSense settings for GTA 6. To compare the two consoles, see GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox.

Can I change stick sensitivity on a standard Xbox controller?

Not in the Xbox Accessories app. Xbox Support only lists stick sensitivity curves for the Elite Series 2 and joysticks on the Adaptive Controller. Not announced Whether GTA 6 has its own sensitivity sliders isn’t known yet.

Will a remap carry over to other games?

Xbox Support’s pages don’t describe profiles that switch automatically for each game. Analysis Treat a remap as applying everywhere, and switch back to the default profile when you play something else.

Can I play GTA 6 with a mouse and keyboard on Xbox?

Not announced Rockstar hasn’t said whether GTA 6 supports a mouse and keyboard on Xbox Series X|S. The Xbox Store listing doesn’t mention it.
