GTA 6 arrives on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. You can’t play it yet, but you can arrive ready. This guide separates three things clearly: what Rockstar has confirmed, what worked in GTA V and may carry over, and what to stay away from.

What’s confirmed that changes how you play

Two leads, and switching has rules

You play as Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson explained the switching rules to Famitsu, in an interview translated by GamesRadar:

  1. Some missions let you switch freely, as often as you like.
  2. Some lock you to one character. An early mission in a high rise is set to Jason, because his background makes it more natural for him to lead.
  3. Some force a switch. In the bank getaway from An Extended Look, you start as Jason shooting from the car, then take over as Lucia at the wheel while Jason and Raul Bautista fire from the back.

So don’t fight the game when the switch option is missing. It is a story choice, not a bug.

Nelson also told IGN, as GamesRadar reported, that the two stay partners whatever you do, but how you treat the relationship shapes how their story plays out. Pay attention to how you act around each other.

Leonida is big and varied

Rockstar has named six regions of Leonida: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Rockstar hasn’t said whether all of them are open from the start.

Plenty to do between missions

Rockstar’s Only in Leonida page shows fishing, hunting, scuba diving, kayaking, airboats, off road trails, mini golf and a gym. Our side activities list tracks each one and where it was shown.

One player, no online at launch

Rockstar calls GTA 6 a single player experience, and no online mode is announced. Our single player and online explainer covers what the store listings say.

GTA V habits worth bringing

Everything in this section comes from GTA V. Each habit worked there; Rockstar hasn’t confirmed any of these systems for GTA 6, so treat them as instincts to test, not rules.

Fresh ideas for your first week

Plan a Leonida road trip

Instead of rushing the story, give yourself one evening per region once the game lets you travel. A route built only from confirmed details:

  1. Vice City: the art deco hotels and white sand of Ocean Beach, with Flash FM on.
  2. Leonida Keys: a scuba dive, where Rockstar shows a sea turtle, coral and an eel.
  3. Grassrivers: an airboat among the alligators, with Back Country Radio, which Rockstar says is beamed out to the Grassrivers and Port Gellhorn.
  4. Port Gellhorn: the faded resort strip and its neon motels.
  5. Ambrosia: the sugar refinery country around Allied Crystal.
  6. Mount Kalaga: off road trails, kayaking, and the deer and cougar Rockstar has shown there.

Every animal Rockstar has shown so far is on our wildlife list.

Play to each character’s strengths

TechRadar spotted Jason’s focus meter, which slows time while he aims. Rockstar’s site shows Lucia training on a heavy bag, and Rockstar described her to Dazed, via TechRadar, as an amateur fighter. When you get a free choice, try gunfights as Jason and close quarters work as Lucia, and see whether it suits you.

Match the radio to the mood

Rockstar has named six stations so far, plus on demand podcasts, and you can hear previews on its music page. Our radio stations roundup lists hosts and songs for each, from Cocoteo FM to The Chamber 106.6. Pick a favourite now for long drives.

Set your console up now

On PS5, Sony’s game presets page explains Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets, where you can choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, camera pan and tilt direction, and subtitles and audio. Sony notes presets may not work with every PS5 game. PlayStation Plus members can also turn on Auto-Sync Saved Data under Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data, following Sony’s cloud storage page, so a story save is never only on one console.

Keep a checklist

Tick off edition, preload and unlock time on our GTA 6 checklist. It saves your progress in your browser.

What to avoid

  • Fake “GTA 6 PC download” sites. No PC version is announced. Anything offering one is a scam; see is GTA 6 on PC.
  • Leak videos. They spoil the story, and we never link them.
  • Money sellers and modded accounts. GTA 6 has no announced online mode, so anyone selling GTA 6 money or accounts is selling nothing you can trust.
  • Spoilers. Set filters before launch week:
    1. X: go to Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, Mute and block, then Muted words, and add terms like “GTA 6 ending”. X’s help page lets you mute for 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days or forever.
    2. TikTok: look for the keyword filter in your content preferences settings and add the same terms. TikTok’s help centre explains filtering videos by keyword.
    3. YouTube: there is no keyword mute for viewers. Use Not interested and Don’t recommend channel on spoiler videos, per YouTube’s help page.

We’ll update this at launch

Once the game is out on November 19, we’ll add how saving, the phone, money and photo tools really work, which regions open first, and our first hours route. For timing, see the release time in your country and our preload guide.
