Buy GTA 6 on the console you already own. It launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same day, at the same price, and outlets report the same 30fps target on both. The only official difference so far is the PlayStation Store’s “PS5 Pro Enhanced” tag, and Rockstar has not said what it adds.

If you are buying a console for GTA 6, the details below show what is confirmed, what is reported and what is still unknown.

Does GTA 6 run better on PS5 or Xbox?

Nobody has shown a difference yet. Rockstar’s An Extended Look was captured in game on a standard PS5, and Rockstar has not published footage from an Xbox. VGC, TechRadar and GamesRadar reported that the game runs at 30 frames per second on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch, from comments by Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson that reached them second hand. GamesRadar adds that Rockstar is undecided about a performance mode.

Independent comparisons will only be possible once the game is out on November 19. We will add them here when major outlets publish them.

Is GTA 6 better on PS5 Pro?

Confirmed The PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as “PS5 Pro Enhanced”.

Not announced Rockstar has not said what that means for this game: higher resolution, steadier frame rate, better ray tracing or something else. The label alone does not promise a higher frame rate.

Analysis If you already have a PS5, there is no confirmed reason to upgrade to a Pro for GTA 6 yet. Wait for launch week tests before spending on one.

Does GTA 6 work on Xbox Series S?

Confirmed Yes. Every official listing says Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox Store marks the game “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S”.

Not announced Rockstar has not said how the Series S version compares with Series X.

Graphics modes and performance: what is confirmed

Status for GTA 6
Frame rate at launchReported as 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S by VGC, TechRadar and GamesRadar
Performance or 60fps modeNot announced
PS5 Pro Enhanced tagConfirmed on the PlayStation Store
What the PS5 Pro adds to GTA 6Not announced
120Hz and VRRNot announced
Series S compared with Series XNot announced

Confirmed Sony’s PS5 Pro page says Pro enhancements can mean higher frame rates, PSSR upscaling and more ray tracing, but only in selected PS5 games, and that what each game gets varies. So the tag tells you GTA 6 has some Pro specific work, not which of these it gets.

Analysis Until Rockstar or launch week tests say more, plan as if all four consoles run the same game at the reported 30fps. What the PS5 Pro and the Series S change is not known yet.

Storage on each console

Not announced Rockstar hasn’t given an install size. Kotaku reported a 210 GB download on PS5, read from PlayStation Store data, and no Xbox figure has been reported. Each console keeps part of its drive for the system.

ConsoleBuilt in storageWhat 210 GB means
PS5 (original 825 GB model)Just over 650 GB usable, per GameSpotAbout a third of the space
PS5 Pro2TB, per Sony (part reserved for the system)Fits with plenty left
Xbox Series X1TB, or 2TB on one edition, per MicrosoftFits; plan space on the 1TB model
Xbox Series S512GB or 1TB, per Microsoft; GameSpot reports 364 GB usable on the 512GB modelClose to 60% of the 512GB model

Our file size guide has download times and how to free space, and the launch day setup guide covers storage settings on each console.

Which should you buy?

Analysis Our advice, based only on what is confirmed today:

  • You own one of the consoles already: buy GTA 6 there. Nothing confirmed makes it worth switching.
  • Your friends play on one console: GTA 6 is a single player game at launch, and Rockstar has not announced an online mode or crossplay, so this matters less than usual. If an online mode comes later, the platform your friends use could matter. See GTA 6 online: what we know.
  • You are buying a console for GTA 6 and want the best version: wait for the first performance tests in launch week. The PS5 Pro is the only model with an official “Enhanced” tag, but its benefits are not announced.
  • You are choosing between Series S models or have a 512GB Series S: Analysis storage matters more than power. At the reported 210 GB, GTA 6 would fill most of the 512GB model, so the 1TB model or a Storage Expansion Card saves you deleting other games.
  • You only play on PC: there is no PC version announced. You can play on November 19 only with a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. See Is GTA 6 on PC?

Common questions

Can I play GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?

No. GTA 6 is only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. More in Is GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?

Is there PlayStation or Xbox exclusive content?

Not announced Rockstar has not announced content for one console only. The editions, the Vintage Vice City Pack and the free GTA+ month are offered on both.

Can I move my copy between PS5 and Xbox?

No. A copy bought on the PlayStation Store plays on PlayStation and one bought on the Microsoft Store plays on Xbox, so pick before you buy.

Do I need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass to play?

Not announced Rockstar has not said that a subscription is needed. The stores list GTA 6 as a single player game with offline play enabled on PlayStation. See GTA 6 online: what we know.
