GTA 6 is reported to be a 210 GB download on PS5, but Rockstar has not confirmed a size. Kotaku reported the figure on October 27, 2026, from an account that tracks download sizes in the PlayStation Store. The official store listings still show no size, and no figure has been reported for Xbox Series X|S yet.
We will put the official size for PS5 and Xbox here as soon as a console store lists it, most likely when preloading opens on November 12.
What is confirmed about the download
| File size | Not announced by Rockstar |
| Preload starts | November 12, 2026 |
| Launch | November 19, 2026 |
| Platforms | PS5 and Xbox Series X|S |
| Boxed copies | A download code, no disc |
Rockstar’s store says physical copies only hold a download code, so everyone downloads the full game, boxed or digital.
The 210 GB report
- What was reported: a 210 GB download for GTA 6 on PlayStation, posted on October 27, 2026 by an account on X that reads download sizes from PlayStation Store listings. Kotaku covered it and says Insider Gaming reported the same number.
- What it covers: the game download only. Kotaku notes it does not include a day one patch, later updates or GTA Online, if any of those come.
- What it doesn’t cover: Xbox Series X|S. No size has been reported for Xbox yet.
- How sure it is: treat it as a planning number, not an official one. Rockstar has not published a size, and the final download can change before launch.
Other, bigger numbers have circulated online over the past two years. They come from leakers, not from a store listing, so we don’t repeat them.
How much of your console 210 GB would fill
Consoles keep part of their drive for the system, so the free space for games is smaller than the drive size on the box.
| Console | Space for games | 210 GB would take |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 (original 825 GB model) | Just over 650 GB, per GameSpot | About a third |
| Xbox Series S | 364 GB, per GameSpot | Close to 60% |
On an Xbox Series S, that leaves room for very little else. Kotaku’s writer, who plays on a Series S, says GTA 6 would take up nearly two thirds of the usable space.
How it compares with Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar’s last big open world game, Red Dead Redemption 2, needed about 99 GB on PS4 and 107 GB on Xbox One at its 2018 launch, as GameSpot reported. A 210 GB GTA 6 would be roughly twice that.
How long a 210 GB download takes
These times are the maths for 210 GB at a steady full speed. Real downloads are usually slower because store servers get busy, and launch week will be busy.
| Internet speed | Time for 210 GB |
|---|---|
| 50 Mbps | About 9 hours 20 minutes |
| 100 Mbps | About 4 hours 40 minutes |
| 300 Mbps | About 1 hour 35 minutes |
| 500 Mbps | About 56 minutes |
| 1 Gbps | About 28 minutes |
If your connection is on the slow side, the November 12 preload matters more than the size: starting a week early means the game is ready at unlock time in your country, whatever your speed.
How to get ready
- Check your free space now. On PS5, look under Settings, then Storage. On Xbox, open My games and apps, then Manage. Aim for well over 210 GB free so a day one patch fits too.
- Move games off your PS5 instead of deleting them. PlayStation says PS5 games can be moved to USB extended storage to free space, but they have to be copied back to the console or to an M.2 SSD before you can play them.
- Think about an M.2 SSD on PS5. PlayStation says PS5 games can be downloaded to, and played from, an added M.2 SSD, so it is the way to add playable space.
- Preload on day one. Follow how to preload and download GTA 6 and start on November 12.
- Use a wired connection if you can. It is usually faster and steadier than Wi-Fi for a download this big.
- Ignore “GTA 6 PC download” sites. GTA 6 has not been announced for PC, so any site offering a PC download is fake. See is GTA 6 on PC.
What we don’t know yet
- The official download and install size on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Whether the PS5 and Xbox downloads are the same size.
- The size of any day one patch.
Common questions
Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?
At 210 GB it would fit, but it would fill close to 60% of the 364 GB GameSpot reports as usable, so most owners will need to delete or move other games.
Does the boxed version save download space?
No. Rockstar’s store says boxed copies hold a download code, not a disc, so the boxed version downloads the full game too.
When can I start downloading GTA 6?
Preloading starts on November 12, 2026, a week before the November 19 launch.
