When it opened preorders in June 2026, Rockstar described Grand Theft Auto VI as a single player experience, as reported by GameSpot and Pure Xbox.

No online mode for GTA 6 has been announced. There is no official name, date or detail for a multiplayer component.

You will see rumours about an online mode arriving later. Until Rockstar announces something, treat them as unconfirmed. We will cover it the moment there is an official word.

Do I need to be online to play?

The physical version is a download code, so you need an internet connection to download the game. Rockstar’s store listings also note that some features may require an internet connection or a Rockstar Games account.

Still to be confirmed

  • Whether GTA 6 will get an online mode, and its name.
  • A release date and platforms for any online mode.
  • Which single player features, if any, need an internet connection.
  • What the optional in-game purchases listed on the stores will be.
