Rockstar’s heading for Mount Kalaga is Wild, Wild Country, with the line room to breathe on the state’s northern fringes. Rockstar’s image captions call it Mount Kalaga National Park.

What Rockstar says

Rockstar describes the park as a national landmark up against Leonida’s northern border, with prime hunting, fishing and off road trails. In the lush backwoods around it, Rockstar says, live hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals, far from the prying eyes of the government.

It sounds like the most remote region revealed so far, and the furthest in tone from the beaches of Vice City. Rolling Stone describes it simply as a dense forest.

What the official screenshots show

Rockstar has released more stills of Mount Kalaga than of most regions. Its own image descriptions include:

  • a news helicopter flying over a tree covered ridge
  • four people on dirt bikes riding through mud, with an ATV jumping behind them
  • two people carrying rifles through the woods
  • a winding road between two steep hills
  • a cougar stalking a herd of deer drinking from a stream
  • someone in a life vest kayaking toward a bridge

The animals and the hunters suggest how hunting will look. Our wildlife and side activities lists track what is confirmed.

The Ultimate Edition’s ‘67 Vapid Dominator Buggy is a “Mud Club monster”, which Rockstar pitches at the backwoods of Mount Kalaga and beyond. It is stored at the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay. Kotaku’s Ultimate Edition guide describes it the same way.

What we don’t know yet

  • Whether Mount Kalaga is based on a real park. Rockstar has not said, and we have not found a major outlet that makes a firm comparison.
  • How hunting works, what you can hunt, and whether you need a licence.
  • Who the “paranoid radicals” are and whether they play a part in the story.
