Very likely, because the record it has to beat already belongs to GTA. In 2013 GTA V passed $1 billion in sales in three days, faster than any film or game before it, and Take-Two’s slides still say no entertainment release has done it faster. GTA 6 launches on November 19 at a higher price than GTA V. Whether it sets a new record will only be known once Rockstar or Take-Two announces a number.
On November 2, Fortune ran the headline “Fastest entertainment property in history” on a story about GTA 6 arriving in a quiet month for cinemas. The phrase is Take-Two’s own: it was the subheading of its 2013 press release announcing GTA V’s first billion. This post sets GTA’s launches against the biggest ones in film and music. For the trailer records and survey numbers, see every record GTA 6 has broken before launch.
The biggest launches in games, film and music
| Launch | Year | Opening number | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA V | 2013 | $815.7 million in 24 hours; over $1 billion in 3 days | Guinness World Records; Take-Two |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 2018 | Over $725 million in 3 days | Take-Two |
| Avengers: Endgame | 2019 | $1.2 billion worldwide opening; $1 billion in 5 days | Variety; Guinness World Records |
| Taylor Swift, The Life of a Showgirl | 2025 | 4,002,000 album units in its first US week | Guinness World Records, from Luminate data |
GTA V: the fastest to $1 billion
Confirmed Take-Two said on September 20, 2013 that GTA V had passed $1 billion in worldwide retail sales in its first three days. It believed that was faster than any entertainment property had reached the mark, films included. The film it named as the previous record holder was The Avengers.
Confirmed Guinness World Records confirmed it weeks later. GTA V made $815.7 million and sold 11.21 million copies in its first 24 hours, which Guinness listed as the highest revenue any entertainment product had made in a day. It also listed GTA V as the fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion. Take-Two’s investor slides still make that claim today.
Red Dead Redemption 2: the biggest opening weekend
Confirmed Rockstar’s next game came close. Red Dead Redemption 2 made over $725 million in retail sales in its first three days in October 2018. It launched on a Friday, so Take-Two called it the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history, and the second biggest three day launch after GTA V, which had launched on a Tuesday.
Avengers: Endgame: the biggest film opening
Confirmed Avengers: Endgame opened in April 2019 with $1.2 billion worldwide, Variety reported, including $357.1 million in the US and Canada according to Box Office Mojo. Guinness lists it as the fastest film to gross $1 billion, in five days. It went on to make $2.8 billion worldwide.
So the biggest film launch ever still took two days longer than GTA V to reach a billion.
Music: big in copies, smaller in money
Confirmed The biggest week for an album in the US belongs to Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl, with 4,002,000 equivalent album units in October 2025, according to Guinness. That figure counts streams and sales together, and is reported in units rather than dollars, so it can’t be lined up against GTA’s billion directly.
Analysis Even if every one of those units had been a full-price album, the total would be a small fraction of a game launch priced at $80 a copy.
Where GTA 6 starts
Confirmed GTA 6 costs $79.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition in the US, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Preorders opened on June 25, 2026.
Analysis At those prices, $1 billion is roughly 12.5 million standard copies at full price, or 10 million Ultimate Editions. GTA V sold 11.21 million copies in its first day alone. Prices differ by country and stores discount, so treat that as a rough sense of scale, not a forecast.
Confirmed Take-Two has not said how many preorders it has. In August, CEO Strauss Zelnick only said GTA 6 had “an exceptional start to pre-orders”. The company expects record net bookings of $8.0 to $8.2 billion for the year to March 2027, with about 37% of that coming from Rockstar Games.
Outside estimates are much bigger than any past launch, but they are estimates:
- Sensor Tower put GTA 6 at about 7 million digital preorders worth around $675 million by late October, GameSpot reported. Its Karl Kontus said preorders could reach about 25 million by launch.
- Newzoo said in July that GTA 6 was on track for $3.25 to $5.2 billion in sales by the end of launch week, VGC reported.
More forecasts, and how they were worked out, are in what analysts expect from GTA 6.
Why these numbers don’t line up perfectly
Analysis A game launch and a film opening are measured differently. GTA and Red Dead’s figures are worldwide retail sales announced by the publisher. Film figures are ticket sales gathered by box office trackers. Album figures are units from a chart data company. None of the numbers above are adjusted for inflation, and a game costs many times more than a cinema ticket, so fewer buyers can produce more money.
Analysis There is also a difference in how fast copies can reach players. GTA 6 can be preloaded from November 10, so millions of digital copies are already bought and installed before unlock. A film can only sell as many seats as cinemas have.
How we’ll know if GTA 6 beat the record
Analysis Only an announcement from Rockstar or Take-Two will settle it. In 2013 Take-Two announced GTA V’s billion three days after launch. If GTA 6 passes a milestone, expect a similar statement. If it doesn’t come quickly, the full numbers arrive with Take-Two’s October to December results, normally in early February. Its November 9 results come before launch and won’t include any launch sales.
Common questions
Has anything beaten GTA V’s launch since 2013?
Confirmed Not by Take-Two’s count. Its current investor slides still say GTA V reached $1 billion in retail sales faster than any entertainment release in history, and Guinness’s fastest film to $1 billion, Avengers: Endgame, took five days.
Is GTA 6 the most expensive game ever made?
Not announced Take-Two and Rockstar have never published GTA 6’s budget. Any figure you see is an estimate.
