The Grand Theft Auto series has sold in nearly 475 million units, and GTA V accounts for almost half of that on its own, with over 230 million. Those are Take-Two’s latest figures, from its August 2026 investor slides. San Andreas (27.5 million) and GTA IV (22 million) are the next biggest sellers with an official number.
Take-Two, which owns Rockstar Games, only gives sales figures for its biggest games, and only now and then. So the table below gives each game’s most recent official figure and the date it was stated. Some games have never had one.
Every GTA game’s sales
| Game | Released | Copies sold (latest official figure) | Figure from |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA V (with GTA Online) | 2013 | Over 230 million | Take-Two, August 2026 |
| GTA San Andreas | 2004 | 27.5 million | Rockstar, via Kotaku, September 2011 |
| GTA IV | 2008 | 22 million | Take-Two, via Kotaku, September 2011 |
| GTA Vice City | 2002 | 17.5 million | Take-Two, March 2008 |
| GTA III | 2001 | 14.5 million | Take-Two, March 2008 |
| GTA Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories | 2005, 2006 | No official figure | |
| GTA Chinatown Wars | 2009 | No official figure | |
| The Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony | 2009 | No official figure | |
| Grand Theft Auto, GTA London, GTA 2 | 1997 to 1999 | No official figure | |
| GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | 2021 | No official figure | |
| GTA 6 | November 19, 2026 | Not out yet | |
| Whole series | Nearly 475 million | Take-Two, August 2026 |
Older figures are old because Take-Two stopped quoting them. San Andreas and GTA IV have certainly sold more since 2011, on later consoles, phones and in collections, but no newer official count exists, so we don’t guess one.
“No official figure” means neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has published one. Numbers for those games do circulate online, but they are estimates or come from sources we can’t check.
What “sold in” means
Take-Two counts units sold in: copies shipped or sold to shops and digital stores, not necessarily bought by players yet. It is the measure the company uses in all its reports. Older statements, like the 2008 and 2011 figures, say “sold” or “shipped”, which works the same way.
A unit is one copy on one platform. Someone who bought GTA V on PS3, then PS4, then PS5 counts three times. That is part of the reason GTA V’s number is so high.
GTA V: from 32.5 million to 230 million
GTA V came out in September 2013 and added about 5 million more units in the April to June 2026 quarter alone, almost 13 years later. Here is how its official total has grown:
| Date | Units sold in | Source |
|---|---|---|
| February 2014 | Over 32.5 million | Take-Two results release |
| May 2024 | About 200 million | Take-Two, reported by VGC |
| March 2026 | Over 225 million | Take-Two annual report |
| August 2026 | Over 230 million | Take-Two quarterly report and investor slides |
Take-Two’s slides also call GTA V the best-selling game of the past 10 years in the US, by both units and dollars, citing Circana’s US sales tracking from January 2016 to December 2025. GTA V has come out on three console generations (PS3 and Xbox 360, PS4 and Xbox One, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S) plus PC, and every copy includes GTA Online.
The PS2 years: GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas
The three PS2 games made GTA the biggest series in games. In a March 2008 presentation, Take-Two put GTA III at 14.5 million units, Vice City at 17.5 million and San Andreas at 21.5 million, and the whole series at over 70 million.
Three years later, in September 2011, Rockstar told Kotaku that San Andreas had reached 27.5 million, still more than any other GTA game at the time. GTA IV was at 22 million in the same report. Take-Two had announced in March 2010 that GTA IV had passed 15 million.
None of the three PS2 games has had an official update since. The 2021 Definitive Edition remasters have no published sales figure either.
How GTA compares with Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar’s other big series is far behind GTA in total but still huge. Take-Two’s August 2026 slides say:
- Red Dead Redemption 2: over 87 million units sold in.
- Red Dead Redemption series: nearly 116 million.
So GTA V alone has sold more than two and a half times as many as Red Dead Redemption 2, and the GTA series about four times as many as the Red Dead series.
What about GTA 6?
Confirmed GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, so it has no sales figure yet. Take-Two hasn’t given a preorder number either. On its August 2026 earnings call, it said only that the game had “an exceptional start to pre-orders”.
Analysis Take-Two’s next results come on Monday, November 9, but they cover July to September, before launch. The first GTA 6 sales numbers will most likely come with the October to December results, which Take-Two usually reports in early February. We will add them here. Our Take-Two earnings post covers what the company expects from the launch.
