Hunter

The Hunter is the military attack helicopter of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and the top reward for collecting hidden packages. GameSpot’s guide says it carries a machine gun and rockets, both with unlimited ammunition. You first see one in All Hands on Deck, when an army helicopter attacks Colonel Cortez’s yacht.

How to unlock it

There are two ways, and both IGN and GameSpot agree on them.

1. Collect all 100 hidden packages. IGN and GamesRadar both list the Hunter as the 100 package reward, along with $100,000 in cash. IGN puts it at Fort Baxter Air Base, and GamesRadar adds a second spawn at Lance Vance’s house. GameSpot’s older guide places the package reward on the Ocean Beach helipad instead, so check both spots.
2. Finish the story. After the final mission, Keep Your Friends Close…, GameSpot and IGN say a Hunter appears at Fort Baxter Air Base.

Getting into Fort Baxter

The base is guarded. GameSpot suggests wearing the police outfit from the Washington Beach police station, which you unlock in Cop Land. Take the stairs on the left to get past the barbed wire, then find the two gaps in the fences to the north to reach the helicopter.

What to do with it

GameSpot recommends trying vigilante missions in the Hunter or the Rhino. Any law enforcement or military vehicle can start them, and reaching level 12 raises Tommy’s maximum armor to 150. GameSpot says a military vehicle lets you breeze through them, and IGN rates the Hunter as the best choice of all: it is quicker than the police Cheetah and its machine gun can destroy vehicles, so you avoid shootouts in the street.

Top speed

We don’t list a top speed because we haven’t found a measured or official figure from an allowed source.
