San Andreas was the first GTA to give its lead a body to look after. CJ gets fitter, fatter, stronger and better with guns as you play, and the game explains only part of it. These tips come from IGN’s beginner guide, its tips pages and its stats guides.
What to do first
- Follow the story through Los Santos. Most early missions pay in respect rather than cash, but they open the gym, clothes shops, barbers and gang wars. IGN notes that the initials on the mini map show who gives each mission, such as S for Sweet or BS for Big Smoke.
- Visit the gym once it opens. Sweet sends CJ to the Ganton Gym after the Drive-Thru mission.
- Try a vehicle mission early. Steal an ambulance or a police car and start its side mission. The full sets give permanent bonuses (see below).
- Buy a safehouse near the action. Saving close to a mission giver cuts down the drive back if you fail.
Stats
Press L1 / LT / Tab to see CJ’s stats. IGN explains what each one does:
| Stat | What it does | How to raise it |
|---|---|---|
| Stamina | How far CJ can sprint | Running, swimming, cycling, treadmill or exercise bike |
| Muscle | Melee damage, looks, gym moves | Dumbbells or bench press; cycling helps too |
| Fat | Changes his shape and speed | Rises when he eats, falls when he exercises or goes hungry |
| Lung capacity | Time underwater | Swimming underwater |
| Respect | Gang size and how the hood treats CJ | Missions, killing rival gang members, taking turf |
| Weapon skill | How well CJ handles each weapon type | Using that weapon, or Ammu-Nation shooting ranges |
| Sex appeal | Helps with girlfriends | Muscle, clothes, haircuts, tattoos and cars |
Keep fat in balance
This is the stat new players get wrong most. IGN warns that if Fat drops to zero, CJ starts to lose Muscle until he eats again. Too much food makes him slower. Stop at a food vendor or restaurant between missions, and ride a bicycle to burn some off.
Cycle everywhere
IGN’s tips say cycling raises Stamina and Muscle faster than running, and CJ never has to stop for breath. It is the easiest way to improve both without grinding.
Gyms
There are three gyms: Ganton Gym in Los Santos, Cobra Martial Arts Gym in San Fierro and Below the Belt Gym in Las Venturas. CJ can only work out so much in one day. Once his Muscle is high enough, beat the trainer at each gym to learn a running attack, a combo and a ground attack in that gym’s fighting style.
Respect and your crew
Grove Street members wear green. Lock on to one and press up on the d-pad (G on PC) to recruit them. IGN says CJ starts with room for two followers, and high respect raises that to seven.
Weapon skills
Each weapon type has its own skill. IGN says maxing the skill for smaller guns lets CJ hold one in each hand, and skilled CJ moves faster with bigger weapons. Every Ammu-Nation has a shooting range for practice.
Saving, dying and the wanted level
- Save often. IGN notes that saving clears your wanted level. On the original versions you have to drive back to the mission marker after a failure, while the Definitive Edition adds an instant retry.
- Wasted or busted costs you. CJ wakes at a hospital or police station without his weapons and with less money. Two girlfriends soften this, as our girlfriends guide explains.
- Losing the police. The wanted level goes up to six stars. A Pay ‘n’ Spray resprays the car for $100, and bribe stars in fixed spots each drop your level.
Combat
- Always wear body armor. It costs $200 at Ammu-Nation and adds a second health bar.
- Crouch. IGN says crouching steadies your aim, and behind waist high cover CJ fires over the top.
- Reload behind cover and watch the mini map for enemies coming from the side.
- Free gear. IGN points out that getting into a police car hands CJ a pump shotgun, and entering an ambulance gives a small health boost.
Side activities worth doing early
- Paramedic missions: all 12 levels max out CJ’s health.
- Vigilante missions: all 12 levels make body armor far stronger.
- Firefighter missions: CJ becomes immune to fire.
- Taxi missions: IGN says finishing them adds nitro to every taxi.
- Burglary: after Ryder’s Home Invasion mission, rob houses at night with the black Boxville van. IGN says about $10,000 in stolen goods unlocks unlimited sprint.
Advanced tips
- Do not rush gang wars. IGN explains that the story later takes CJ away from Los Santos and his turf goes back to rival gangs, so time spent on territory early is partly lost. See our gang wars guide.
- Pick up the collectibles as you pass. Tags, snapshots, horseshoes and oysters all pay out. Our collectibles guide lists the rewards.
- Learn the schools. CJ first visits Driving School in San Fierro during the mission Back to School, and the other schools unlock planes, boats and bikes. See our schools guide.
- Plan for 100%. Our 100% guide shows what counts and what does not.
