Key facts

Bigfoot

Ghost cars
Real, cars rolling down slopes
Gant Bridge sign
Top of a tower, reach it by jetpack
Ghost graffiti
Los Santos graveyard, 20:00 to 6:00 (IGN)

San Andreas has more hidden jokes and references than most players ever find, and even more rumors that grew up around it. This guide keeps the two apart. The easter eggs below are documented by IGN. The myths section explains what Kotaku, GamesRadar and IGN found, including what a former Rockstar North developer has said.

Easter eggs

The Gant Bridge sign

A nod to the famous hidden message in GTA 3. Fly a jetpack to the top of the first tower of Gant Bridge as you cross from the San Fierro side, then look to the right. A small sign reads “There are no Easter Eggs up here. Go away.”

The Gant Bridge fact board

On the San Fierro side, near the diner by Katie’s house, a set of steps leads to a board of facts about the bridge. IGN points out that the last fact is about how much disk space the bridge takes up.

Shooting the moon

At night, aim a sniper rifle at the moon and fire. IGN says the moon gets bigger with every hit.

Action figures in Zero’s shop

Behind the counter in Zero’s RC shop sit action figures from GTA Vice City, Tommy Vercetti and Lance Vance, and from Rockstar’s Manhunt, James Earl Cash and Piggsy.

More Rockstar references

  • Lance Vance billboard: a billboard in Richman, Los Santos, shows the Vice City character.
  • James Earl Cash: his photo is pinned to a board in the Las Venturas police station. IGN warns the officers will open fire if you pull out a sniper rifle for a closer look.
  • Max Pane: a small sign in the window of the gas station in Dillimore, a joke on Max Payne, which Rockstar published.
  • Jesus Saves: a mural near the Ammu-Nation closest to Grove Street recalls the save point of the same name in GTA 2.
  • R.I.P. Opposition: a row of graves in a San Fierro cemetery across from the Avispa Country Club. IGN notes the dates, 1997 to 2004, match the first GTA and San Andreas.

Ghost graffiti

Visit a Los Santos graveyard between 20:00 and 6:00 and look at the wall beside the large brick building. IGN says a glowing green Grove Street message appears there at night and is gone by morning.

Catalina’s graves

Next to the entrance of Catalina’s house in the countryside are three unmarked graves and a shovel. IGN reads them as a dark hint about her past boyfriends.

Zombotech

In Downtown San Fierro, go through the open double doors next to the Burger Shot. Inside is the lobby of Zombotech, a company that openly advertises its zombie virus research. IGN sees it as a riff on Resident Evil’s Umbrella.

The Rockstar constellation

On a clear night, look for stars forming a large R. IGN suggests the desert between San Fierro and Las Venturas, where no buildings block the sky.

Myths and what is really going on

Bigfoot

The most famous San Andreas rumor said Bigfoot roamed the forests. Kotaku reported that former Rockstar North developer Obbe Vermeij said plainly that it is not in the game. IGN and GamesRadar also call it a hoax. Rockstar later had fun with the legend: IGN points to a Sasquatch hunt in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare and to the GTA 5 mission The Last One.

Ghost cars

This one is real, but not supernatural. Players reported empty cars driving down hills in the countryside. Kotaku explains that a beaten up version of the Glendale can spawn on slopes with nobody inside and roll downhill, which looks like it is driving itself. Vermeij confirmed that explanation. Kotaku adds that videos showing them with headlights on, or really driving, were made with mods or editing.

Planes that fall out of the sky

Small planes sometimes crash near CJ for no clear reason. In posts reported by Kotaku, Vermeij explained that fly by planes are spawned near the player, and the check for obstacles in their path is limited, so some hit thin objects like trees or power poles. He also said the Luck stat has nothing to do with it.

The photographer who walks into the sea

Kotaku covered the pedestrian who takes a photo on a cliff and then walks into the water. According to Vermeij, people in the world head for nearby points of interest, such as an ATM or a chair, after an action. For this pedestrian, the nearest one may be across the water.

Other monsters and killers

  • Piggsy and Leatherface: rumors put chainsaw killers around Mount Chiliad. IGN and GamesRadar both call them hoaxes.
  • The Loch Ness Monster: said to live in Fisher’s Lagoon. IGN calls it another hoax, though Rockstar later added a nod to it in GTA Online’s Cayo Perico Heist.
  • UFOs: a map pinned in a back room of the Little Probe Inn, as IGN names it, led to stories of alien sightings. IGN says the pins lead nowhere special.
  • Mr Trenchcoat: a real but rare pedestrian, mostly around Fort Carson, who talks about being abducted by aliens. IGN found no truth in rumors that he is a killer.

Tips for secret hunters

  • Get the jetpack first. IGN says it spawns at Verdant Meadows after the mission Green Goo, and several secrets sit high up.
  • Wait until the right time of night for the graveyard and the constellation.
  • Treat any new “proof” of a monster with suspicion. GamesRadar notes that many old screenshots came from mods or editing.
