The Jetpack is, in IGN’s words, one of the most unique vehicles in the game. It straps to CJ’s back and lets him fly over Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas without needing a helicopter or plane. IGN calls it one of the best ways to travel in the game.
How to get it
CJ first uses the Jetpack in Black Project, a mission for The Truth run from the airstrip. IGN says he breaks into Area 69, fights off the military and escapes on the Jetpack. That comes roughly halfway through the story.
To keep it, play the next airstrip mission, Green Goo, where CJ steals a tub of green goo from a moving train. Afterwards The Truth gives CJ the Jetpack and it spawns for good at the Verdant Meadows Airstrip, near the old control tower and the water tank. Green Goo also turns the airstrip into an asset that earns up to $10,000. IGN adds that you can still take one from the spot inside Area 69 where it sat during Black Project.
How to fly it
IGN suggests thinking of the Jetpack as a helicopter, since the controls are much the same. Rise with X, RT or Space and drop with Square, LT or Shift, then steer with the left stick or WASD. You can even fire a gun while flying. To take it off, land and press Triangle, Y or F.
Why it is so useful
The Jetpack is a favourite with collectible hunters. IGN’s horseshoe guide recommends it because a few of the horseshoes in Las Venturas sit on rooftops, and its vehicle guide calls the Jetpack a requirement for some of them. It also opens up hidden spots, such as the joke sign at the top of a Gant Bridge tower that IGN describes in its Easter egg guide, a callback to a similar message in GTA 3.
