You can cancel a GTA 6 preorder on the PlayStation Store for a refund as long as you haven’t started downloading or preloading the game. If you paid more than 14 days before the November 19 release, you can cancel any time up to release day. If you paid later, you have 14 days from payment. You request it from Transaction History on the web, and the money usually goes back to the card or account you paid with.
We used PlayStation’s US and UK pages, which give the same preorder rules. Other regions can differ, and local law may give you more rights, so check your own country’s page on playstation.com.
The cancellation rules for digital preorders
Confirmed Sony’s cancellation policy sets two windows for digital preorders:
| When you paid | How long you can cancel |
|---|---|
| More than 14 days before release | Any time before the release date |
| 14 days or less before release | Up to 14 days after payment |
With GTA 6 out on November 19, 2026, “more than 14 days before” means paying before November 5.
Both windows come with one condition: you must not have started downloading or streaming the main game, and Sony counts preloading as downloading. Once a download has begun, PlayStation only refunds the game if it is faulty.
Watch out for the preload
GTA 6 preloading opens on November 12, 2026, a week before release (see our preload guide). Sony warns that downloads can start automatically if Automatic Downloads is switched on.
Analysis If you are not sure you want to keep your preorder, turn off auto-downloads before November 12. Otherwise the preload may start on its own and you lose the right to cancel. In practice, the start of your preload is your real deadline, not release day.
How to request the refund
Confirmed PlayStation’s refund page gives these steps:
- On a computer or phone browser, sign in to Account Management at playstation.com and select Transaction History.
- Choose a date range that covers your preorder, then select the GTA 6 transaction.
- Select Request Refund and follow the on-screen steps.
Transaction History also appears on the PS5 under Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions, but Sony’s guide only lists the Request Refund button on the web version.
If the button isn’t there, or the request fails, contact PlayStation Support. Sony’s preorder page points you to its support contact page, under Store and then Refunds, and the refund page mentions an online assistant that can check eligibility. Have your Online ID, your sign-in email and the product name ready.
Where the refund goes and how long it takes
Confirmed Sony says refunds go back to the payment method you used, where possible. If that isn’t possible, for example when you paid with wallet funds from a voucher, the money goes to your PlayStation wallet. Sony’s preorder page also lists some payment types that always refund to the wallet, such as Paysafecard, Sofort and mobile operator billing.
Sony says a refund can take 30 to 60 days to arrive.
What happens to the preorder bonuses
Confirmed Sony’s policy says any extra content you could use straight away from a preorder stops working when you cancel.
For GTA 6, the preorder bonuses are the Vintage Vice City Pack, a free month of GTA+ for digital console store purchases and the seven day preload. Not announced Neither Rockstar nor PlayStation has said what happens to a GTA+ month you have already claimed if you then cancel the game. The free month renews at the normal price afterwards, and PlayStation’s offer terms say to cancel the subscription before the next payment date if you don’t want to keep it.
Switching from Standard to Ultimate
Not announced PlayStation’s pages don’t describe a way to swap one preorder for another edition.
You have two options:
- Keep the Standard preorder and add the upgrade. The Ultimate Edition Upgrade is sold separately. The Xbox Store lists it at $20; see GTA 6 editions and price. PlayStation’s GTA+ offer terms note that the upgrade on its own doesn’t count for the free GTA+ month.
- Cancel and buy the Ultimate Edition. Cancel the Standard preorder under the rules above, then buy the Ultimate Edition.
Analysis If you cancel and rebuy, the new purchase starts its own cancellation window. Rebuy on or before November 19, launch day, so it still comes with the Vintage Vice City Pack (deadline details). Keep in mind the refund can take weeks, so you pay for both copies for a while.
Preorders from a shop or another store
A boxed copy, or a preorder from Amazon, a supermarket or another retailer, follows that retailer’s own cancellation and return rules, not the PlayStation Store’s. Check your order confirmation or the retailer’s help pages. Boxed GTA 6 copies contain a download code; see how to preorder GTA 6.
PlayStation’s policy also covers physical orders bought directly from PlayStation: it says these can usually be cancelled until about 8 days before release, before they enter shipping.
Common questions
Can I cancel after GTA 6 comes out?
Only if you paid 14 days or less before release, haven’t downloaded the game and are still within 14 days of paying. Once you have downloaded it, Sony only refunds faulty content.
Will cancelling affect my PSN account?
Not announced Sony’s pages don’t mention any penalty for cancelling within the rules.
Can I get a refund on a boxed copy’s download code?
Analysis Ask the shop you bought it from. The code is part of a physical purchase, so the retailer’s return rules apply.
Is it worth preordering if I might change my mind?
Analysis The Vintage Vice City Pack comes with any copy bought on or before November 19, launch day, so preordering early mainly gets you the preload. If you are unsure, you can wait until closer to release.
