How to Cancel a GTA VI Preorder on Xbox and Get a Refund

You can cancel a GTA 6 preorder from the Microsoft Store in your Order history at account.microsoft.com, up to 10 days before the game launches. With GTA 6 out on November 19, 2026, that means around November 9. After that point Xbox may already have charged you, and you request a refund instead of cancelling. Microsoft says a preorder cancelled after billing but before release is handled as a refund.

These are the rules on Xbox Support and Microsoft Support in the US. Local consumer law may give you more rights, so check your own country’s Microsoft pages too.

When Xbox charges you for a preorder

Confirmed Xbox Support explains that the payment method decides when you pay:

Microsoft’s own preorder page words it as “up to 10 days before the release date” for digital downloads.

Analysis For GTA 6, card payments should go through around November 9. That is also the end of the simple cancel window, so if you are unsure, decide before then.

If the charge fails, Microsoft tries again a few days later. If the second attempt also fails, the preorder is cancelled and you have to buy the game again. You can switch cards in Order history with Change how you pay at any time before billing.

How to cancel before you are charged

Confirmed Microsoft’s cancellation steps:

Sign in to Order history at account.microsoft.com/billing/orders with the account that preordered GTA 6.
Find the GTA 6 preorder and select Cancel item.
Tick the box next to it, then select Cancel item again.
Look for the confirmation email. Microsoft suggests checking your spam folder if it doesn’t arrive within a few minutes.

You can do this from any browser. Microsoft’s pages don’t list a cancel button on the console itself.

If Cancel item isn’t there, Microsoft says you have probably been billed already. For Xbox purchases it sends you to the Xbox refund form instead.

How to request a refund after you are charged

Confirmed On Xbox Support, open Request a refund for digital games and sign in. Microsoft describes the form like this:

Select GTA 6 from your purchases and choose Request a refund.
Give your reason, then select Next.
Check the details and select Submit.

Microsoft says a request can take up to 72 hours to process, and you can follow it on the Refund status tab. If you can’t see the game in the list, Xbox Support has a separate help page for missing purchases.

Who gets a refund

Xbox Support’s refund page sets out these rules for digital games:

Confirmed Refunds are typically issued for requests made within 14 days of purchase, if you haven’t played a significant amount.
Confirmed You can ask for up to 90 days after purchase, but not every request is accepted.
Confirmed Microsoft limits how many game refunds each buyer gets in a year.
Confirmed Decisions are final. If you are turned down, you can appeal by replying to the decision email, but you can’t send the same request again.

Not announced Microsoft’s pages don’t say whether the 14 days count from the day you preordered or the day you were charged. Analysis If you change your mind after November 9, request the refund straight away rather than waiting.

Where the money goes

Confirmed Once a refund is approved, it shows as processing on your Microsoft account and you lose access to the game. Xbox Support says it can take several business days or longer to reach you, so check with your bank. Microsoft’s refund page says refunds generally go back to the original payment option.

Watch out for the preload

Not announced Microsoft doesn’t say whether installing a preload affects a refund. Its refund terms do list “use of the product” as one of the things it considers. Analysis If you might cancel, don’t install the preload until you have decided.

What happens to the preorder bonuses

Confirmed Xbox Support says you keep any preorder incentives no matter when you are charged, as long as the preorder stands. The Xbox Store lists two for GTA 6 bought before 19 November 2026, 23:59:59: the Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+. See our preorder bonuses guide for how to claim them.

Not announced Neither Microsoft nor Rockstar has said what happens to a GTA+ month you have already redeemed if you then cancel the game. GTA+ is a separate subscription for GTA Online, so check its renewal date in your Microsoft account if you claimed it.

Switching from Standard to Ultimate

Not announced Microsoft’s pages don’t describe swapping a preorder for another edition. You have two options:

Keep the Standard preorder and add the upgrade. The Xbox Store sells the Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately for $20. Details are in GTA 6 editions and price.
Cancel and buy the Ultimate Edition. Cancel the Standard preorder under the rules above, then buy the Ultimate Edition.

Analysis On Xbox, the upgrade costs the same as the gap between the two editions, so adding it is usually simpler than cancelling and rebuying.

Boxed copies and other shops

A boxed copy, or a preorder from Amazon, a supermarket or another retailer, follows that shop’s own cancellation and return rules, not Microsoft’s. Can I cancel GTA 6 on the Xbox console?

Microsoft’s steps use Order history in a web browser, which works on a phone or computer. The console doesn’t appear in its cancellation instructions.

Why was my preorder cancelled when I didn’t ask?

Microsoft cancels a preorder if it can’t take payment after two attempts, for example because a card expired. You can buy the game again once you add a working payment method.

My child preordered GTA 6 without asking. Can I get the money back?
