Add your child to your Xbox family group with their own Microsoft account, and the console will block GTA 6 by its age rating unless you approve it. Confirmed GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB and PEGI 18 on the UK Xbox Store. Microsoft says anything rated above a child’s age filter needs an organizer’s approval. Menu names below are from Xbox Support’s own pages.

Set up a family group and a child account
Xbox parental controls work through a family group. Adults are organizers and can change settings. Child and teen accounts are members with the limits organizers set. Microsoft says these settings follow the member to any Xbox console or device they sign in to.
To add your child on the console:
- Press the Xbox button, select Profile & system and sign in to your own account.
- Open the guide again and go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members.
- Select Add to family > Add new. Enter your child’s email, or choose Get a new email to make one, which is where you enter their date of birth.
- Give consent as the organizer, either on This Xbox or through an email sent to Their phone/PC.
If your child already has a profile on the console, select Add to family and pick their profile instead. Microsoft notes that someone already in another family group has to be removed from it first.
You can also add family members in the Xbox Family Settings app on iOS and Android. Most of the settings below can be changed there too.
Set the age filter for games
Microsoft says a member’s age limit starts from the date of birth on their Microsoft account, so check that date is right before you change anything.
- On the console: go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members, select your child and choose an age level under Access to content.
- In the Xbox Family Settings app: open Settings, select your child, then Content restrictions, and pick an age under Apply age filters.
Analysis With the default filter, GTA 6 should be blocked for any child whose account age is below the game’s rating. If the birth date on the account makes your child look older than they are, the filter won’t catch it.
What happens when your child tries to play GTA 6
A blocked game shows a request instead of starting. You can answer it on the console or in the Xbox Family Settings app.
To approve it on the console, Microsoft’s steps are:
- Have your child sign in. Sign out any other profiles that aren’t being used.
- Press the Xbox button and go to My games & apps > See all, find the game and select Ask now.
- On Choose who will give permission, select your organizer account and sign in, or enter the console’s PIN.
- Choose Always or Just this once.
Before you choose, know the difference:
- Always is permanent. Microsoft says this exception can’t be revoked later.
- Just this once ends as soon as your child signs out of the console.
- The game has to be bought, downloaded and installed before you can grant an exception for it.
Analysis Because Always can’t be undone, use Just this once while you decide whether GTA 6 is right for your child.
Two things can make it look as if the controls are misbehaving. When an adult and a child are signed in together, Microsoft says the console applies the child’s limits, so you may not see mature games until the child signs out. And if several profiles are signed in, a game stays blocked until every profile below its rating has permission.
Require approval for purchases
Confirmed The ESRB lists In-Game Purchases for GTA 6, and the Xbox Store notes that it offers in-app purchases. Not announced Rockstar hasn’t said what can be bought.
Turn on purchase approval in any of these places:
- On the console: Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members, choose your child, then Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download, and set Ask a parent to On.
- In the app: select your child, then the Ask to buy tile under Spending, and turn on Ask to buy.
- On the web: on the Microsoft Family Safety site, select your child, then More options > Spending, and turn on Require approval for every purchase. Spending notifications tells you about each purchase.
Microsoft notes that approval isn’t needed when currency or Xbox gift cards are used. Analysis If you add money to your child’s account, treat that balance as money they can spend without asking you.
Lock the controls with a PIN
A child who knows your password can approve their own requests. Microsoft suggests two kinds of PIN:
- A PIN for your own profile: Profile & system > Settings > Account > Sign-in, security & PIN > Create my PIN. Under Change my sign-in & security preferences you can require it for purchases. Microsoft warns that anyone who knows your Microsoft account password can reset this PIN.
- An access PIN for the console: Profile & system > Settings > System > Access restrictions > Create an access PIN. It controls what can be used when nobody is signed in. In the same area you can set an age level under Access to content and turn off Allow adding and creating new profiles, so nobody can get around the controls with a new account.
Limit play time
Screen time can’t be set on the console itself. Use the Microsoft Family Safety site or the Xbox Family Settings app.
- On the web: select your child, open the Screen time tile, pick the Xbox device and select Turn limits on. Set the days, the time limit and the time range, then select Done.
- In the app: select your child, open Screen time and choose a schedule. Limits go up in 30-minute steps, and a time range lets play start only after school, for example. The app saves changes on its own.
Microsoft says the clock runs whenever your child is signed in, so they should sign out when they stop playing. To warn them on screen before time runs out, have them turn on System notifications under Profile & system > Settings > Preferences > Notifications > Xbox notifications > System.
Your child can ask for more time, and you can add it from the app with Add time now. Microsoft notes that extra time runs alongside the time left, not after it: an hour added with an hour remaining still ends in an hour. The app also shows Today and Past Week activity reports.
Analysis Story games don’t always let you save at any moment, so give a few minutes’ warning rather than cutting play off mid-mission. Not announced Rockstar hasn’t explained how GTA 6 saves.
Restrict multiplayer and chat
In the Xbox Family Settings app, under Settings for your child:
- Multiplayer: a toggle to block or allow multiplayer. Your child can ask to play online in one game, and you approve or deny the request.
- Social: who your child can talk to online and whether they can follow other players.
- Cross-network play: whether they can play with people on other services, and at what communication level.
On the console, an organizer can pick the Child, Teen or Adult presets under Manage family members > your child > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy, or choose View details & customize. Microsoft says your child has to sign out and back in before changes apply. Message filters live under Privacy & online safety > Message safety, with text levels from Friendly to Unfiltered.
Confirmed Rockstar calls GTA 6 a single player experience, and the Xbox Store lists it as single player. Not announced No online mode has been announced, so how chat would work in the game is unknown. More in GTA 6 single player and online.
Before launch day
GTA 6 is out on November 19, 2026. Analysis Set the controls before then, so the first request comes to you instead of the game starting. For storage, preloading and the rest of the console setup, see GTA 6 launch day setup. If you are buying the game for someone, our editions and price guide explains what each version includes.
Common questions
Do the controls still work if the Xbox is offline?
Yes. Microsoft says content controls stay in place while the console is offline, and profile and family settings can’t be changed until it reconnects.
Do the settings follow my child to a friend’s Xbox?
Microsoft says family safety settings apply to any Xbox console or device the member signs in to, so they travel with your child’s account.
What counts as a child or a teen account?
It depends on the country. In the United States, Microsoft lists Child as ages 8 to 12 and Teen as 13 to 17, based on the date of birth given when the account was made.
What do the GTA 6 rating labels mean?
The ESRB lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Our rating post explains each one.
