Rockstar’s tagline for the Leonida Keys is Gateway to Paradise: the dress code is casual and the bars are loaded. Life in the archipelago is not flashy but it is easy. Pull up a deck chair, Rockstar says, but remember you are on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in America.

Who lives here

  • Jason Duval ended up here after the Army, doing what he knows best: working for local drug runners.
  • Brian Heder is, in Rockstar’s words, a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys. He still moves product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori, and lets others do the dirty work. One official still shows him holding a package and pointing at a man in a plane.

What the official screenshots show

Rockstar’s image descriptions for the Keys include:

  • a seaplane over the water, with a bridge carrying cars between two islands
  • an iguana walking in front of a mobility scooter on a busy street
  • a crowded beach bar, with one man passed out at a picnic table among empty bottles
  • two scuba divers among coral, fish, an eel and a sea turtle
  • a party on boats, with someone on a flamingo float and people jet skiing behind

Rolling Stone sums the region up as a beachfront holiday area full of yachts and partiers. Our side activities and wildlife lists cover what is confirmed.

Rockstar has not named a real place, but the press has. Writing about the first trailer, Kotaku’s Alyssa Mercante pointed to the turquoise water around the islands as the Florida Keys and identified a bridge in it as the Seven Mile Bridge, which links the mainland to the Keys. That identification is hers, not Rockstar’s.

What we don’t know yet

  • How many islands there are and whether they connect to the mainland by road.
  • How Jason’s work for the drug runners plays out in missions.
  • Whether Brian’s boat yard is somewhere you can visit freely.
