GTA 6’s biggest marketing moments so far are a gameplay premiere on Netflix, the whole of Miami dressing up as Vice City, and a string of surprises in between: a South Park clip, a TV ad on NBA opening night, murals in Brooklyn and Paris, and brands from Ireland to Finland joining in. Here are nine of them, each checked against Rockstar or a major outlet.
They are in date order. Few of them come with published audience figures, so there is no fair way to rank them by reach. The game itself launches on November 19.
1. Gameplay premiered on Netflix (August 27)
Rockstar’s 26 minute gameplay showcase, An Extended Look, premiered on Netflix before it reached YouTube. Netflix counted 31.1 million views in its first four days, which made it the service’s most watched title that week, Variety and GamesRadar reported. Netflix counts a view as total hours watched divided by the running time, so the number isn’t comparable with YouTube views. More in our Extended Look breakdown.
2. Miami turned into Vice City (from September)
The city of Miami Beach voted 4 to 3 in September to let Rockstar’s campaign go ahead. A huge “Welcome to Vice City” sign now sits on top of the Miami Heat’s arena, with Burger Shot and Cluckin’ Bell counters inside. On November 18, the night before launch, the Heat play as the Vice City Heat against the Milwaukee Bucks, live on ESPN. In October, Kotaku also reported Vice City beach chairs, umbrellas and cabanas on Miami’s beaches and blimps over the city. The full timeline is in Miami turns into Vice City.
3. A $399.99 box with no game in it (September 24 and October 8)
Rockstar opened preorders for The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection on September 24: a $399.99 box of Macca the Gator collectibles, one per person, shipping from launch day. It doesn’t include the game. On October 8 the Rockstar Store added a regular collection of tees, caps, a Zippo lighter and more. See the collector’s box and the Rockstar Store merch.
4. Murals in Brooklyn and Paris (October)
On October 2, Kotaku reported painters putting up a mural of Jason and Lucia on a wall in Brooklyn. Two weeks later a giant banner of the cover art went up on one of the Les Mercuriales towers in Paris. Kotaku noticed that the French version cuts out the guns. Lucia’s pistol is gone along with her hand, and so is an assault rifle from another panel.
5. A gaming peace treaty from Gigantti in Finland (October 13)
The Finnish electronics retailer Gigantti launched the Grand Game Deal, a written agreement for households to sign about how much GTA 6 time the player gets. Its press release describes three levels named after difficulty settings: Easy covers launch day, Normal the launch week, and Hard a whole month in return for favours such as chores or gifts. Everyone who signs gets a 10% code for gaming accessories at Gigantti and enters a draw for a PS5 Slim with GTA 6. It runs in Finland from October 13 to November 15, with the template on grandgamedeal.fi.
6. A new Justice single in the Launch Trailer (October 15)
Rockstar released the Launch Trailer without warning and used it to reveal Justice as the game’s score composers, with a new single, “Flower in a Hurricane” featuring Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. In the UK it has reached No. 31 on the Official Singles Chart and No. 6 on the downloads chart, according to its Official Charts page. The full score comes out on December 11; see GTA 6 Original Score by Justice.
7. The first TV ad, on NBA opening night (October 20)
GTA 6’s first TV ad aired during the NBA season’s opening night on October 20, Kotaku reported. It is a cut of the Launch Trailer with two shower shots removed for broadcast and a few shots running longer. Kotaku says the extra frames show nothing new.
8. Virgin Media Ireland pays €100 an hour (late October)
Virgin Media Ireland is offering one fan €100 an hour to play GTA 6 for eight hours, €800 in all, Variety reported. The winner has to post an honest review on Instagram or TikTok. Only adults living in the Republic of Ireland can enter, and entries close on November 15, GameSpot adds. It is also in our records post.
9. A gameplay clip inside South Park (October 29)
With no announcement, about 20 seconds of new gameplay aired inside South Park’s season 29 episode “Guinea Pig on a Stick”. It shows Jason picking up dog mess and using it in a street fight, and the credits thank Rockstar Games. See the South Park clip.
What we left out
Some widely shared moments didn’t make the list because no approved source has covered them in detail yet. One is Xbox’s “November 19th” post on X from May, whose reported view counts come only from smaller sites. Another is a convoy of real cars made up as GTA 6 vehicles in Miami, whose details we couldn’t confirm from an approved source. We will add them if an official source or a major outlet does.
Analysis Most of this campaign happens in the real world rather than online, in a city, an arena, on beaches, in a TV show and during an NBA broadcast. Other brands are joining in on their own too, from a Finnish electronics chain to an Irish broadband company.
