Press the Create button on your DualSense: one press opens the Create menu, a double press saves the last 30 seconds and a long press takes a screenshot. The PS5 is always recording in the background, so you can grab a moment after it happens. Everything you save goes to Media Gallery, where you can trim it, send it to your phone or copy it to a USB drive. This guide covers clips and screenshots. For live streaming, see how to stream GTA on PS5.
Use the Create button
PlayStation’s sharing guide lists three default presses:
| Press | What it does |
|---|---|
| One short press | Opens the Create menu |
| Double press | Saves the last 30 seconds of gameplay |
| Hold for about three seconds | Takes a screenshot |
The Create menu itself has three capture options:
- Take Screenshot captures the screen as it is now.
- Save Recent Gameplay saves what the console has already recorded in the background, from the last 15 seconds up to the last hour.
- Start New Recording records from now for up to an hour. Press Create again and pick Stop Recording to end it.
The menu also shows Recently created, your 15 newest captures, and Capture Options, where you can change the format and resolution or include your mic and voice chat.
Analysis For GTA 6, set the double press to a longer clip before you start. Car chases and wanted-level escapes often run past 30 seconds, and you can always trim a long clip later.
Set up captures before launch
Go to Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures. Sony lists these options:
- Shortcuts for Create Button: choose Standard, Easy Screenshots or Easy Video Clips. Easy Screenshots makes one press take a screenshot without opening the menu. This is also where you change the recent gameplay length: 15 seconds, 3, 5, 15 or 30 minutes, or 1 hour.
- Screenshot Format: pick the file type and turn on HDR. HDR screenshots only work with a compatible display.
- Video Clip Format: pick the file type and resolution. 4K recording needs a compatible display.
- Audio sharing settings: choose whether your microphone or voice chat goes into clips. Sony asks you to get permission from the people in voice chat before including them.
On a PS5 Pro, 8K Resolution Screenshot is in the same menu. It needs an 8K game and an 8K screen. Not announced Rockstar hasn’t said which resolutions GTA 6 outputs.
Trophy clips save on their own
The PS5 can capture trophy moments automatically. Go to Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Auto-Captures > Trophies, then turn on Save Trophy Screenshots or Save Trophy Videos and set Trophy Video Duration. They appear under the Trophies tab in Media Gallery.
Not announced Rockstar hasn’t published GTA 6’s trophy list.
Find your captures in Media Gallery
From your games home, select Media Gallery. The tabs at the top sort your captures:
- All: every screenshot and clip, newest first.
- Favorites: anything you marked with Add to Favorites.
- Trophies: trophy moment clips.
- Albums: captures grouped by game.
For something you just saved, it is quicker to press the PS button and open the Recently created card in the control center.
Trim and edit a clip
Open a capture in Media Gallery and select Edit.
- Clips: Set Trim cuts time from the start or end (select Preview before saving). You can also choose a Cover Image or take a screenshot from any frame.
- Screenshots: Crop to rotate and reframe, and Add Text to write over the image.
For music, transitions or voice commentary, install the free Share Factory Studio app from PlayStation Store, then pick a capture and select More > Edit in Share Factory Studio.
Share your clips
With friends on PS5
From Media Gallery or the Recently created card, pick a capture and select Share, then choose a player or party. Sony’s limits: one clip or up to four screenshots per share, and clips shared with a group can be up to 3 minutes long.
To your phone with the PlayStation App
Turn on Auto-Upload in Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures, or in the app under Library > Captures. Sony says:
- Clips under 3 minutes at up to 1920x1080 upload. 4K clips don’t.
- Screenshots taken with the Create button upload. Trophy auto-captures don’t.
- Captures stay in the app for 14 days. PlayStation Plus isn’t needed.
- The PS5 must be linked to the app and, in rest mode, have Stay Connected to the Internet on.
To upload one capture by hand, highlight it in Media Gallery, press Options and select Upload to PlayStation App. On your phone, open the capture and use Download, or Share > Share via to post it from your phone’s apps.
Copy to a USB drive
Plug in a USB drive, select a capture in Media Gallery, then select More > Copy to USB Drive. Analysis This is the way to move 4K or long clips to a computer for editing, since the app won’t take them.
Some scenes may not record
Sony notes that games can block some scenes, and those parts won’t appear in your clips. Not announced Rockstar hasn’t said whether GTA 6 blocks capture anywhere, such as in story cutscenes. If a clip comes out with a gap or a blocked notice, the game is doing it, not your settings.
Common questions
Does GTA 6 have a photo mode?
Not announced Rockstar hasn’t confirmed a photo mode for GTA 6. Until it does, the Create button screenshot is the way to capture the game on PS5. We’ll update this when the game is out.
Can I share GTA 6 story clips straight away?
Analysis You can, but think about spoilers. Many players will be working through the story for weeks after 19 November. Keep story scenes out of titles and thumbnails, and say in the post that it contains spoilers. Our YouTube channel guide has more on this.
Will clips fill up my storage?
Captures are stored on the console, alongside your games. Analysis Long 4K recordings take more room, so clear old clips out of Media Gallery or copy them to USB, especially with GTA 6 needing a large install. See GTA 6 launch day setup for storage tips.
Do I need a capture card?
No, not for clips and screenshots. A capture card is for recording or streaming through a PC with more control. If that’s what you want, see the best capture cards and gear for streaming GTA.
