Rockstar hasn’t given an official length for GTA 6. The closest figure is Rob Nelson’s: the co-head of Rockstar North told The New York Times that his own playthrough, in February 2026, took about 80 hours. That covered the main story plus some optional goals that affect the story. There is no official figure for 100% completion either.
We’ll replace this with real numbers from reviews and our own playthrough after the game launches on November 19.
Where the 80 hours comes from
GamesRadar and TechRadar both reported the figure from Nelson’s New York Times interview in August 2026. The details matter:
- One person, one run. It is how long Nelson took, not an average or a target Rockstar has set.
- Not story only. His run included some optional goals that affect the story. Neither the interview nor the reports say which ones, or how many he skipped.
- A pre-release build. He played in February 2026, nine months before launch.
Analysis A developer knows where every mission starts and how each one works, which saves time. A new player also explores, gets lost and retries missions, which adds it. So treat 80 hours as a rough size, not a promise. TechRadar’s own estimate is that players who explore and do side activities could pass 100 hours; that is TechRadar’s guess, not a Rockstar figure.
How it compares with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2
| Game | Story length | Who said it |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 (2013) | About 30 hours | TechRadar |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | 60 hours for the main story | Dan Houser, Rockstar co-founder, to Vulture (via GamesRadar) |
| GTA 6 (2026) | About 80 hours, with some optional goals | Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to The New York Times |
The three numbers aren’t measured the same way. Houser gave a design figure for Red Dead 2’s main story in 2018, and said it had been 65 hours before about five hours were cut. TechRadar’s GTA 5 figure is its own rough number. Nelson’s is a single playthrough that included extra content. Even so, every source points the same way: TechRadar calls GTA 6 Rockstar’s longest game yet.
For a sense of scale, GamesRadar counts 69 story missions in GTA 5. Not announced Rockstar hasn’t said how many missions GTA 6 has.
What adds time in GTA 6
In Edge’s preview, Rob Nelson played the game for about 90 minutes (free on GamesRadar). A few things suggest the story will take longer than a list of missions would:
- Breaks between missions. Edge says GTA 6 sometimes gates the next story job. Jason and Lucia may need to raise cash first, by holding up a gas station or jewellery store, or stealing a car a fence wants.
- A longer day. Edge reports that GTA 5’s brisk day and night cycle has been extended substantially.
- Time together. Jason and Lucia’s closeness rises on a four point scale through things like beach walks, cycling, the gym and driving around together.
- Daily life. Nelson told The New York Times he hopes some players will get up, have a coffee, shower and go out for exercise in the game. Food and drink give short boosts.
There are also side activities Rockstar has confirmed, such as fishing, hunting, scuba diving and airboats. Our activities list has them all.
What about 100% completion?
Not announced Rockstar hasn’t said what counts towards 100% in GTA 6, whether there is a completion tracker, or how long it takes. Collectibles and the trophy list haven’t been published yet.
For comparison, GTA 5 had a 100% Game Completion goal with its own trophy and achievement, Career Criminal, as GamesRadar’s trophy guide lists. Analysis If GTA 6 follows that pattern, 100% will mean the story plus a long list of side content, and it will take well beyond the 80 hours above.
We’ll publish the trophy and achievement list and a collectibles guide once they are public.
How to plan your launch week
Analysis If 80 hours is anywhere near right, a few evenings won’t finish it. Some practical points:
- Pace the first week. At two to three hours a night, an 80 hour run takes about a month. That is simple arithmetic, not a forecast.
- Don’t rush to avoid spoilers. Mute the game’s name and the leads’ names on social media for a while instead.
- Preload. The game unlocks November 19, and preloading from November 10 saves you a long download. See how to preload.
- Plan your first session. Our first hour plan and beginner tips help you start well.
What we’ll add at launch
- Main story and 100% times from the major outlets’ reviews (when reviews come out)
- Our own time for the main story
- The number of story missions and what 100% includes
Common questions
Is GTA 6 longer than Red Dead Redemption 2?
Going by Rockstar’s own figures, probably. Rob Nelson’s run took about 80 hours with some optional goals, against 60 hours for Red Dead 2’s main story. The two figures were measured differently, so wait for launch to compare like with like. Our GTA 6 vs GTA 5 vs Red Dead 2 page compares them in more detail.
Can you keep playing after the story ends?
Not announced Rockstar hasn’t said whether the open world stays playable after the final mission. We’ll answer this at launch.
Does GTA 6 have an online mode to keep playing?
Not announced No. The PlayStation Store listing describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience. See does GTA 6 have online.
