GTA 6 follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a couple who get pulled into a criminal conspiracy across the state of Leonida after an easy score goes wrong. That one line is nearly all Rockstar has said about the plot. Everything else comes from the character pages on Rockstar’s site and four official trailers, and this page sticks to those. It stays spoiler light: nothing here goes beyond what Rockstar has chosen to show.

The official story summary

Rockstar’s GTA VI site and the Trailer 2 page carry the same short summary. Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. When an easy score goes wrong, they end up “on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America”, caught in a conspiracy that stretches across Leonida. From there, Rockstar says, they have to rely on each other more than ever.

Rockstar has not said what the score was, who is behind the conspiracy, or how the story ends.

Who the story is about

Both leads are playable. Rockstar’s profiles give each of them a short backstory:

  • Jason Duval grew up around grifters and crooks, joined the Army to leave a troubled adolescence behind, and ended up in the Leonida Keys working for local drug runners. Rockstar says meeting Lucia could be the best or worst thing ever to happen to him.
  • Lucia Caminos learned to fight from her father. Fighting for her family put her in the Leonida Penitentiary, and sheer luck got her out. She wants the good life her mother has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City, and Rockstar says a life with Jason could be her way out.

Our Jason and Lucia guide covers the pair, their relationship and the people around them in more detail.

What each trailer shows

Trailer 1 (December 2023) opens on Lucia in a prison uniform. Asked why she is locked up, she says “Bad luck, I guess.” By the end she is free and with a partner, telling him that sticking together is the only way through, and the two agree to trust each other (as Kotaku reported). He is not named in the trailer.

Trailer 2 (May 2025) gave both leads their full names. Kotaku pointed to Jason picking Lucia up as she leaves prison, and to the final shot of her coming home and collapsing onto him on the couch. It was also the first time Rockstar introduced the supporting cast on its site.

An Extended Look (August 2026) is a 26 minute run through early missions captured in game. Kotaku and GamesRadar described a pickup for Boobie Ike that turns into a police raid, a night at home before a party, a visit to Brian Heder’s rooftop party where he hands the pair a job, and a getaway drive for a new contact. GamesRadar’s account links that getaway to the bank robber Raul Bautista. It ends with the couple working security at a party that is attacked, with Lucia fighting her way out after her guns were taken.

The Launch Trailer (October 2026) leans on Jason’s past. TechRadar said it opens with him talking about his Army days, and that it shows him taking a call from Lucia while she is in prison. TechRadar and GamesRadar both spotted Lucia wearing an ankle monitor. Both outlets read some of these shots as coming from early in the story, but Rockstar has not said where they fall.

How the story is told

Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson has explained a few rules, as reported by GamesRadar:

  • Switching is tied to the story. You cannot swap between Jason and Lucia whenever you like. In the getaway mission from An Extended Look, the game switches you from Jason to Lucia mid chase.
  • The couple stay together. Nelson told IGN they “will remain partners in crime” however you treat the relationship, but how much you nurture it affects how their story plays out.

Theories we won’t repeat

There are plenty of fan theories about the plot, the villain and the ending. None of them come from Rockstar, so we leave them out. We also never use material from leaks.

What we don’t know yet

  • What the easy score was and why it goes wrong
  • Who is behind the conspiracy across Leonida
  • How Jason and Lucia first met (see our hub for what has been shown)
  • Exactly why Lucia was in prison and how she got out beyond “sheer luck”
  • How Jason’s Army career ended
  • How many endings there are, if more than one

The full story arrives with the game on November 19, 2026. We will update this page once it is out, with spoilers clearly marked.
