Rampages are short killing sprees marked by a skull icon. Step on the skull and the game hands you a set weapon, a target and a clock: kill a number of gang members, or destroy a number of vehicles, before time runs out. There are 35 in Vice City, according to IGN and GamesRadar, and all of them count toward 100% completion. The area counts and examples below come from IGN’s wiki; GamesRadar and GameSpot add the rules and tips.
How rampages work
- The weapon is fixed. Each rampage gives you its own weapon, from a katana to a rocket launcher. GamesRadar notes that you cannot pick up or buy other weapons while one is running.
- The clock. Every rampage IGN describes has a two minute limit.
- The target. Most ask for gang members, from 10 to 40 of them. A few ask you to destroy 10 to 20 vehicles, and some put you in a car for drive by kills or running people down. GameSpot notes that the gang you face is random.
- Retry as often as you like. IGN’s advice for the harder ones is simply to keep trying until it clicks.
Rewards
The sources disagree on the cash:
- IGN says the first rampage pays $50 and each later one adds another $50.
- GameSpot says the reward starts at $50 and doubles with each rampage you finish.
GamesRadar only says that finishing all 35 brings a small amount of cash and 1% of the completion total. Either way, rampages are not a money maker. Do them for the percentage.
Rampages by area
IGN’s count per area adds up to 35. It lists none on Leaf Links or Prawn Island.
| Area | Rampages | Examples from IGN |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean Beach | 8 | Washington Mall garage roof (chrome shotgun), a wooden dock out at sea (rocket launcher on boats) |
| Washington Beach | 2 | A pink house near Bunch of Tools (MP5) |
| Vice Point | 7 | The docks by the Leaf Links bridge (chainsaw), North Point Mall by Vinyl Countdown (rocket launcher) |
| Starfish Island | 1 | A gated mansion driveway, where the car is the weapon |
| Downtown | 6 | Behind the Moist Palms Hotel (M60), the stairs outside Ammu-Nation (Python) |
| Little Haiti | 1 | Small houses east of the Print Works (Tec-9) |
| Little Havana | 4 | A basketball court (chrome shotgun), a bank loading bay (katana), a clinic roof (sniper rifle) |
| Viceport | 2 | A cargo ship gangway (rocket launcher on vehicles), behind the Hooker Inn (grenades) |
| Escobar International | 4 | The terminal roof (rocket launcher), grass near Fort Baxter Air Base (minigun on 20 vehicles) |
GamesRadar numbers the east island and the small islands as rampages 1 to 18 and the west island as 19 to 35. Most of the west island ones wait until that half of the city opens up during the story.
Tips
- Raise your health and armor first. GamesRadar recommends finishing Pizza Boy level 10 and Vigilante level 12 before the rampages. They raise your maximum health and armor to 150.
- Go in with full health and armor. GamesRadar’s advice for every rampage. Body armor sells for $200 at any Ammu-Nation, according to IGN.
- Keep your distance. GameSpot says being surrounded is the most common way to fail. Start shooting at groups while they are still far away, and put a low wall between you and them.
- Blow up cars for crowds. IGN suggests hitting vehicles near groups of gang members with explosive weapons, so one blast takes down several targets. Never fire a rocket with someone standing right in front of you.
- Use height where you can. IGN’s tip for the Little Havana sniper rampage is to stay on the roof edge, where the gang cannot reach you, and keep retrying from there.
- Watch out for the police. IGN warns that on busy rampages the cops swarm in and steal your auto aim. Move close to the gang groups so your shots land on the right targets.
